@jannem ye a lot of "difficult" opera songs were actually written for a specific performer in mind so it wasn't the composer being diabolical so much as writing a showcase for a particular cast member's unique talents
Seabirds racing home over the ocean can get jet-lagged
A long flight home from feeding grounds messes with birds' internal clocks.

@futurebird Ah, if you mean where there is only one candidate, yes, I do suppose so.
But it still doesn't actually send them a message... They don't see your vote (or lack thereof.) Not directly. I suppose it's possible to find out how many votes they win by and how many people in total voted, but I honestly don't think any ever actually check that...
Perhaps I'm wrong. As you say, it won't actually *hurt* I'm just not sure it gets a message through either.
It puts you on their mailing and polling lists. They call consistent voters, send polls. If a person doesn't show up to vote they fall off the radar.
Their demographics don't even count.
docker is the solution for "but it works on my computer" because the answer is "okay fine we'll ship your computer"
turns out the computer that got shipped was owned by someone who got popped, and everyone who installs it gets popped too.
pretty convenient huh
@Viss I really wish that was the case...
I'm currently struggling to debug an issue that I face when running in a container in certain infra, but not in a container on my machine. 🥲
Docker meaning "we ship your machine" is unfortunately a myth.
All these oblivious politicians who faff around with seasonal time zone changes while never having to manage anything about the practicalities of their own lives really need to spend a couple years being responsible for a food-anxiety-prone cat.
Poor Leelo(o) Ten responded to being put on a diet by immediately learning When Is Food Time, to the minute.
She is presently having a little brain melt as we changed the time on her food robot, and hence on her between-supper-and-bedtime treats.

“Operation Midnight Climax was established in order to study the effects of LSD on non-consenting individuals. Prostitutes on the CIA payroll were instructed to lure clients back to the safehouses, where they were surreptitiously plied with a wide range of substances, including LSD, and monitored behind one-way glass. The prostitutes were instructed in the use of post-coital questioning to investigate whether the victims could be convinced to involuntarily reveal secrets. Many of the CIA operatives involved in the experiments voluntarily indulged in the drugs and prostitutes for recreational purposes.”
@jalefkowit I wonder who picked the name "Midnight Climax"?
Oh no, those insane ads in Apple News stories can now occupy spots in the list of articles? Maybe it’s not worth operating this service if this is what it takes to sustain it.
@kyle Get the Wipr2 Adblock app. Enable it’s Filtr blocking and these ads will go away. It’s the only way to make News+ tolerable. I cannot believe Apple pushes these bottom of the barrel chum ads.
Tirritate fans of the Prime Directive by proposing a scenario where a primitive society prematurely gets its hands on warp drive tech by accidentally hearing the sound of far-away warp drives.

@riley It's clearly a probe from the United Feline Planets, using a laser-pointer to see if there's any intelligent life on Earth (i.e. cats).
@jannem oh and it has melismas that run around the full pitch range so you can't just "transpose the hard parts". Manuel Garcia was a freak of nature with a massive range and the aria was written to take advantage of it
@jannem but in general yea solos can be transposed, it's just that this one in general doesn't do well in transposition
Or knows exactly what it’s supposed to mean and was scared.
@jonhendry I don’t think so, elephantiasis is a very specific thing to be afraid of
I used to work in a theatre box office and set myself the task of not selling a single ticket for any of the run of shows of an atrocity called 'Friendsical', a Friends musical, two things I loathe. I like to think I played a role in the subsequent cancellation of the shows.
@fesshole Well done.
trending on Xiaohongshu
@liaizon what.
@jannem the piece's range is D3-B4 so if you transpose it up you have to find a tenor who can go up to soprano heights, which is possible I suppose....

@meso @jaff @phnt @anemone @sun @rees Few days ago there was an outage at my hosting provider, and I couldn't use my fedi instance for 5 days. Nomadic identity fixes this, because you can clone your account to several instances.
But ultimately, I just want a different experience. I don't want to maintain an always-online server and I don't want to rent a domain name. I want to run everything on my device, secured with my keys, in offline-first manner.
This vision doesn't conflict with anything we have today. I think it is possible to have a comfy instance even if everyone's accounts are nomadic
took the training wheels off my oldest's bike today and they had a great time. what an incredible gift to get to be there for that.
