Not sure why I'm spending time with NetBSD on likely the slowest "modern" hardware I have around? Anyway, for some reason sysinst doesn't ask for a keyboard language in the RPi image, so had to do that myself...
Let's see what else I can install - NetSurf is good enough to browse NetBSD docs and post to Mastodon via Bloat, at least - see the other thread about that. Somehow I'm unreasonably happy with this frontend right now?
Well, I guess swapping will kill this new SD card pretty quickly, even if I'm only using like 5% out of the 64GB currently...
Don't use NetSurf and pkgin at the same time on 256MB RAM ;)
Such a wonderful #StarTrekTNG episode. So very much *Picard* at its core. And then the wonderful Ron Jones soundtrack! I can still remember the first time I watched this one at my best friend Andi's house, he had recorded it on VHS. His mum Resi cooked something yummy for us and I drank peach juice. I miss these times!

Recently found out the guy I was seeing was married. I don't know how to contact his wife, but for some reason he's logged in to iplayer on my TV. Now every time I go out, I leave Mrs Brown's Boys playing - if that watch history doesn't tell her something's wrong, nothing will.
@fesshole try to find her on social media. LinkedIn etc
Whenever I propose something in a meeting and I’m either dismissed or "ignored" by the higher ups only to have them "propose" the same idea shortly after, it takes all of my self control to not screenshot the timestamped text from when I proposed the same idea along with a congratulatory message like "Good idea, Todd!"
I know someone who'd say this every time that happened...
"I'm curious, Todd, how does your idea differ from mine a few minutes ago? Can we compare to make sure we're on the same page? Let's make sure you haven't missed any of my thoughts (u hoary bastard)"
But don't say the last part.
My partner can't wait for midnight, when he can start decorating for Christmas because Mariah Carey said "it's timmmmmmmeeee"
😓
@dansup I keep exclaiming "it's still October!! 😭" and singing Mariah Carey at karaoke
The Three Stooges have been moved into my office and Francis Noodle is delighted to have a new set of minions!
"Has anyone here ever played 'Core Wars'?"
It wasn't the weirdest question our lecturer had asked the class, but it was close. Professor Artemisia Berman had finished the syllabus for RE211 Comparative Religion and Metapsychology last week; this final lecture of the term was listed as "Coda: Conspiracy Theories".
"It's an old computer game", she continued, "where the players write software programs that all reside in the address space of a single simulated computer. The goal of each program is to eliminate the others by overwriting their memory, and to maximise its own survivability by replicating to control the shared address space. This is directly analogous to religions and other metacognitive entities."
A murmur ran around the room. This was a little more off the wall than usual.
"As you'd know if you've read my book 'The Origin of Metaconsciousness in the Arthropoidal Hivemind', it is my thesis that metacognitive entities such as anthives and beeswarms made the leap to mammals around a hundred and fifty thousand years BCE. Religions were the first metacognitive entities to run on the mammalian brain; since then joined by nation-states, corporations, conspiracy theories and political parties."
I was sitting up straight now. I'd heard of the epithet "Bizarro Berman" applied to Dr B and her off the cuff closing lectures covering extrasyllabic material. The University had tried to stop these, but tenure still meant something at The Big U.
Berman continued: "The common goal of all these entities is survival. And like in core wars the way to do that is to expand territory and eliminate competitors."
"This semester we have reviewed the major religions that are still executing on human brains today. We've seen that these all feature a characteristic fictive origin narrative. For example Judaism purports to have begun around 2000BCE yet the entire text of the Pentateuch in fact dates to no earlier than 300BCE, Christianity has no evidence for the historicity of its founder, with gospel texts unable to be substantiated before the second century of the common era, and some not before the tenth. Islam, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Sikhism, and all the others we've studied consist of a narrative that, looking back, shades into myth somewhere in the first quarter of their purported histories."
"Why do religions do this? Camouflage! A metacognitive entity executing on a hundred million brains for several centuries has sufficient spatiotemporal baseline to manifest a very small retrotemporal instantiation—say a virus or a tumor—in one brain. But if the founder is lost in mythical nonhistory, retroassassination becomes a crapshoot."
"The same is true today, Bermuda Triangle, Roswell Incident, MAGA, Facebook, all these metacognitive entities transition from fiction to actual history /somewhere/ in their development but their survival in part depends on concealing the phase-change from competitors."
Il n’est jamais trop tard.
@mark I think you're waxing a bit on the hyperbole side on this one. Star Trek was, by Gene's own definition, meant to be "Wagon Train in Outer Space". And while yes, Wagon Train did explore personalities and motivations, it was basically conflict driven episodic television, as has been the entire ST franchise. Gene had his own views of course, not all of which are widely known today, but ultimately it all comes down to a famous line reaching back a long, long way: "It's only TV."

I'm at a wedding. Everyone under 40 is in a costume. Everyone over 40 is in tailored tuxedos and multi-hundred dollar designer dresses. I brought a robot toy. Being an adult is strange.
