@ericjames @mynameistillian @prahou I simply make art that people do not want to see, and then nobody bothers me to create all the time. I am very clever.
@chris What you could attempt (if possible) is spin up the database and try running `tootctl` in a `chroot`
@EdwinG ooh! I think the copy actually completed just now. Hooray. Phew. Double checking…

Once we returned, Zeus spun a painful death for me,
at the hands of my own wife and cursed Aegisthus."

The best part of Halloween is hanging out with our kids and making costumes out of cardboard.🤗
It's almost done! We just need to attach the gold plated human spine and hair tassel to the back as soon as those parts are dry.
I've been given strict instructions not to do that part until after school!
@mekkaokereke That’s a fantastic helmet!
New fun insult just dropped: “I see you are committed to your current level of understanding.”

This is why I have been pessimistic about LLM "reverse engineering". The big LLM companies will just do the equivalent of YouTube/Twitch taking down your video/stream when they detect copyrighted music or whatever.
Big companies can slurp up the commons, but you won't be able to return the favor.
EDIT: seems I am spreading misinformation in this specific case. That person was suspended for a *different reason* than reverse engineering. I'm still pessimistic about using frontier models to reverse engineer but the scenario I explained above hasn't actually happened yet, as far as I know.
@dthompson the ability to do this is certainly a feature for them nevertheless though. reverse engineering is a powerful skill and if anything, being able to usurp it from people who might have been able to learn to do it organically and withhold it when it's convenient is certainly a capability they would like to have
Low effort #Halloween costume this year: I guess I'm just going to get a white felt sheet, cut out the number 4, pin it on my black sweater and call it a day 😂
@cazabon@mindly.social saw you are not European. I will look tomorrow for you.
The Government™ has made an ad about all these protests around the world, and it’s surprisingly honest and informative! 🌍

Godot
Not specific to Godot but I prefer the second one. The if breaks the flow of reading IMHO. You could add a comment to explain the whole thing though.
No judgement but why is it not called set_value instead of set_default_value? And why is it returning a value? I’m a noob at Godot.
Oh, *this* is scummy.
Amazon, owner of IMDB (The Internet Movie Database), has decided that being logged into Amazon when you visit IMDB automatically means you consent to them auto-creating an account on IMDB for you. And, of course, transferring your personal info from Amazon to IMDB to populate that account.
And *that* account is by default signed up to all of their spam and marketing preferences.
All of this happens with zero clicks - no consent whatsoever.
I'm going through and turning it all off, and will try to see if I can just delete it completely afterwards.
Saw someone defending the AI labs by saying most of the cases of "AI psychosis" can be traced back to one particular model that isn't available anymore, to which my main reaction is that it doesn't seem great the labs are testing the safety of these things by exposing billions of people to them and then waiting to see how many of them lose their minds
For example, here is a Moon-surface backdrop. This is NOT a NASA photo. It's digitally-painted in Gimp, but it did USE NASA photos as a texture source by painting with the "clone" tool.
Is it more of an original work, with the NASA photos as mere "fair use"..? Or is it an actual "derivative work" of the NASA photo?

I needed a backdrop to stand for the view east from Iridium Basin. As far as I know, no actual photo is available from this location, certainly not from Apollo.
So, based on the geography, I made a quick sketch of what I expected, then painted in detail from different NASA Apollo photos (likely Apollo 15 and/or 17).
Not scientifically accurate, of course, but it is, as I occasionally have to remind myself, only a cartoon.
This backdrop is in the background of these stills from the main title sequence (and episode 3, when I get there), although the ground immediately below the lander is a similarly-created texture from a straight-down shot of the regolith, also from Apollo, rendered in Blender along with the lander.

Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti?
^_^
What really riles me when I see captcha prompts asking: "are you a robot?"
I am like: "Who wants to know? However, yes, I am part of the proletariat! I guess, you, since you're asking, presumably aren't?"
Alas, I don't know who it was (maybe Asimov?) who demeaned "robot" into something to instead be synonymous with mecha and automata [which predated robots by at least centuries, perhaps longer based on some Roman era records] and seemed to erase the whole: "no war, but class war" which was the underlying theme of R.U.R., the play which was the origin story of the term robot. Robot uprising, is a canonical association, not a fluke.
I mean, I too, as a corporeally incarnated human of the late 20th century, encountered the demeaned phrasing of "robot" with all sorts of toys and Scientific American articles about car factories being filled with "robots" replacing pre-NAFTA auto workers (who would be even further terminated and outsourced to cheaper laborers outside of the USA, after NAFTA). Yet, for some reason I had some relatives who attempted to tell me that "robot" was closer to being synonymous with "slave" as a means to educate me about its etymology and my high school even put on a play of R.U.R.
Oddly, or perhaps not surprisingly? There has never been a film adaptation of R.U.R. as far as I know? We got Will Smith in I, Robot (again, Asimov); we have a multiplicity of Transformers ("Robots in disguise"? Disguised from what I wonder?) movies, yet there remains a glaring omission of a film version of the R.U.R. robot origin story on the silver screen.
Meanwhile, the lived experience, in a society which continues to operate with the predominantly demeaned Asimovian phrasing of robot? Remains: repugnant.
@teajaygrey The "I, Robot" film has nothing to do with Asimov except the title.
Data brokers and advertisers argue that location data itself is not sensitive data, EFF’s Mario Trujillo told KFF Health News, as reported in @WashPost. “But location data is sensitive. It’s the comprehensive collection of location data that reveals sensitive things.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2026/10/28/your-phone-knows-youre-doctor-data-brokers-are-profiting-it/
The Mastodon 5.0 design is... weird. I don't understand it. I've not hated on previous Mastodon designs but this time, to me it just looks worse than 4.x 🤷♀️
