He who negates present society, and seeks social conditions based on the sharing of property, is a revolutionary whether he calls himself an anarchist or a communist.

@mooooooo @d_rift the theory of CSPRNGs suck too most of them just run AES on an input block repeatedly. this makes the security of AES dependent upon a "random" stream which is itself AES. preposterous! as it turns out lattices are actually a good CSPRNG (i discovered this independently from dwork) and i think we can use that. the only really new theory i have is this symmetric one

:emits pained noise: yes let's not do that please
@somewhereinjp It's really never too soon. 😁
Also, belated congratulations. There won't be much sleep for the next few years, but enjoy the ride!
@tsturm I already wasn't sleeping well, but now at least it's for a better reason!

Station pier, particularly for its war and migration significance
Also Hotel Sofitel 35th storey toilets
@siftinsand @timrichards TIL about the Sofitel toilets! I should pop up to the top floor of the Sofitel Brisbane where I’m staying now, see if there’s anything comparable (I suspect not).
Happy Wednesday!

@pja What happened now?
@mooooooo @d_rift note that this neatly also generalizes the concept of rounds into the concept of blocks along with merging the concepts of a CSPRNG and block cipher modes. all of these things have terribly informal definitions (yes you heard that right) that are not serious attempts to provide information theoretic security

@jamey I had that complaint too when I was young and inexpireinced and tried Wayland after xcb.
But I had a similar complaint on xcb vs XLib: xcb is harder because of asynchrony and because it lacks some stuff like XLookupString etc.
Something makes me think that such differences are not only because Wayland corrects X's mistakes, but also because of target audiences. In X case that's application developers (I believe people were using XLib directly back in the day), while libwayland is made for toolkit developers.
@ermine Yeah, I think that's true, and I think it's the right choice. Certainly people did write pure Xlib clients, and while I have written pure XCB clients, you're right, that's not the intended audience.
I did feel a little bad replacing single Xlib function calls with pairs of XCB function calls (when you need to get a reply or error), and considered offering convenience functions that would call the request function and then immediately call the reply function too.
But we were trying to encourage people to recognize that round-trips have a cost, and I think making that "easier" would have just encouraged people to write worse X clients.
The many non-protocol helpers that Xlib offered are another matter. I definitely didn't want XCB's scope to creep like Xlib's did. But it was legitimately painful not to have some of that extra functionality on hand. I tried to fix it with the various xcb-util libraries but I'm not sure those ever got enough development to really be useful.
