Powerful text.
"The oligarchs are announcing the battle lines loudly, proudly: that it is us against them. They suggest, without flinching, that for Cyclopes to thrive, humanity may have to die. The young generation that is rising up to fight it understands this. I know that, earlier in this essay, I suggested we should “regulate with extreme prejudice”. But what I really want to say about those AI companies is this: terminate with extreme prejudice."

My queer sci-fi-ish book ‘The Boy From Elsewhere’ is currently 40% off via the Bezosphere.
It’s full price to buy it direct but I get more of the royalties that way.
Either way, if just half my followers picked up a copy, wherever in the world they are, I’d get a desperately needed boost.
Times are hard for creatives. Queer creatives doubly so. Please consider grabbing a cool book and supporting this one?
Probably could have got Q3 and Q7 but today seems to be one of those days. Took ten minutes to bubble even Q10 up into working memory.

@Unixbigot I'm struggling with that being a metaphor for a bad thing. A tiger marching down the street with a squirrel confetti party on its back sounds utterly amazing.

@Farbs @Unixbigot kinda sucks if you're a squirrel tho
something funny that can happen online via text is that you can have like two parallel conversations with the same person about two different subjects in two different spaces, i really like when that happens…

PATTI SMITH GROUP
Easter
1978 Canada pressing
Any time is a good time for Patti.
My favorite female artist of all time, and it’s not particularly close.
Of all her albums, Easter is the one I return to the most.
In comparison to Horses, Easter is more melodic, refined, and much TIGHTER.
It receives the Jimmy Iovine touch, making it more polished, but without sacrificing the artfulness that made Horses GREAT.
Easter slips Patti into the role of poet turned rock n roll General, to wonderful effect.
And it doesn’t hurt to have an incredible Bruce Springsteen-penned song as your centrepiece.
“Because The Night” is extraordinary, and I believe that Patti’s performance is what makes it special. If you’ve ever heard Springsteen’s versions… it’s just not the same.
Patti IS that magic there.
And everywhere else she goes, too.

I wonder if a sufficiently good smartgrid could TEMPEST sidechannel deduce things out of a computer plugged into it. Like maybe decryption produces noticeable signals in tiny-fraction-of-second power draw to such an extent it starts to seem plausible you can gradually derive keys from it
@mcc I would doubt the ability to discern anything useful without sampling the wires at ~MHz, which will also be highly attenuated at any distance from the main panel. You'd have to specifically design for this, and the parts would be substantially more expensive, so I don't think it's realistic that smart grid equipment could be repurposed/hijacked to snoop on keys. A sufficiently motivated adversary could sneak one in, but at that point there are more direct things they could have done.
A request to everyone here who is knowledgeable about the Amiga: A few days ago, I received a very negative review on the Internet Archive. A user complained that one of the games I uploaded was faulty—or rather, it seems they believe several of the floppy disks I uploaded belong to a different game? I honestly cannot make sense of this at all. Could anyone of you guys maybe take a look at that? I would be very grateful!
I am a doctor. I wish that I could prescribe dildos to people. We could in the Victorian era. The amount of people these days getting random household objects stuck in their arses is getting ridiculous. Please, you're an adult, just get a proper and safe dildo, for fuck's sake.
Sex toy safety
@fesshole Safe silicone dildos can be expensive, but if you're only looking for something basic, you can still find silicone ones for more affordable prices. The fancy ones I get (rarely, because I'm not rich) are over US$120, but I've seen simple ones for between US$40 & US$80. That's only a little more than the price you would find a dildo made of an unsafe material for, but the extra cost is worth it. It lasts much longer before wearing out & it won't make you sick.
Don't ever buy plastic or "jelly" dildos. They're impossible to clean & can leach toxic chemicals as they wear out. Silicone is much safer & can be cleaned with the same stuff you clean yourself with in the shower; a basic body wash (not a 2 in 1) with no fancy scents is best. Silicone can also be submerged in boiling water for five minutes to sterilize it, but make sure it isn't being pushed against the bottom or sides of the pot because it will be damaged if it goes above 100°C.
