A downside to researching the current mood and morale among software developers is the frequent sudden onset Nazi praise.
Like, you're watching somebody's kinda half-baked ideas on how the software economy works on YouTube, but it's all from their perspective so still useful information about their experience, and suddenly you get a spiel about how DHH or some other outright fascist is great.

When someone is struggling, we don't wish them "thoughts and prayers" (tho some religious finns will happily pray for you), but we wish them "powers" (voimia).
And I like to imagine them as the powers of the forest, the wind, the deepest lakes, and forgotten secrets hued into the rock by our ancient kin. The spirits reach to give you their strenght, the veil is thin, the old songs lend you aid.
We wish you powers on these tough times.

To which I explain to her, this is the great part of adult life. Every day something new is beeping and you have to interrupt life to go figure it out.

Now I'm listening to Three Houses which is a musical from Dave Malloy (Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812) about three people's experience spending the lockdown portion of the pandemic living in other people's homes alone. Which is an experience I had, but I had significantly fewer epiphanies.
It doesn’t have to be the case that some group is “behind” a thing you dislike, if they exploit that thing then the end result is the same.
YOU can likewise be “behind” a thing you do like. Including yourself.

@montyhayter lol - a chunk of the speed comes from giving up on the idea that I was making a reusable component, so yeah, it’s like…. Really tied to Tapestry now. It’s also way more code. So.. I really hope this doesn’t backfire on me in terms of maintainability but at the same time, I’m sitting here with 5 year old devices at this point so the usual way of upgrading my way out of performance problems wasn’t working. 😛
@bigzaphod I was just looking at some code the other day that is “reusable”, but as needs and use cases have evolved it grown into this sprawling, awkward mess.
When I have time it’s getting redone as separate classes for each use.
Sometimes task specific (or more) is *more* maintainable.
And yeah, “upgrade out of performance issues” is something we can’t count on anymore… and probably shouldn’t have gotten in the habit of in the first place.
For decades managers searched for a way to measure developer productivity. Now AI has given them tokens, and they're convinced they've discovered the holy grail.
We spent 50 years trying to get rid of managers counting lines of code just for them to reinvent it with extra steps and a cloud bill.
Want a good "way to measure developer productivity"?
How about good old-fashioned "return on investment" (ROI)?
Let's say that someone develops a thing with AI in 2 weeks instead of 12. You've just saved 10 weeks and 10 weeks of their pay for just the cost of a few tokens. But let's say the output is sloppy, performs poorly, and costs 10x the memory to store the AI-generated code. If the product will be produced in low-enough quantity, you might still come out ahead. If your only competitors also don't use human-optimized code, their products could be just as bad, and you'd still do alright. But if someone is able to prove that their code (or other intellectual property) wound up in your product without their permission (through injestion into non-discerning AI) and sues for infringement, then your ROI starts to go way down, potentially going quite negative.

In true "you probably have ADHD like everyone else" fashion, I just finished setting up my live environment for tonight so that I don't feel like I'm going to crash and burn.
Why couldn't I have done that a week ago? I really don't know but that's just not how it works for me.
Tonight is gonna be fun! I've been playing with my various live electronics setups for a few years now, but this will be the first time I've ever done an IRL solo show of electronic music.
