can we shout out to the fediverse developers, for making the fediverse possible
shout out to the lemmy developers for not making us be stuck on the other site
shout out to mastodon devs for making us have a better life than on Twitter
shout out to the pixelfed devs for allowing a actual photography platform to exist
shout out to the peertube devs for helping us not be stuck on youtube until the end of time
ETA: Shout out to the server operators who make the stuff be done
(It’s ok to anthropomorphize computers as long as they are very, very old)
@arroz have you taken a family picture recently?
These are the two things (among other things) I just can't get used to, so I've added more options to our instances.
I would bombard the Mastodon core folks with pull requests (in layman's terms: fixes or changes), but one of my suggestions received this response: "As described in CONTRIBUTING.md, we have internal design processes and generally do not accept external contributions without prior discussion on the design." Since then, I've been hesitant and have only sent small ones their way.
The rest stay in our mastodon instance only, like this one.
- Open hashtags directly (I never use those options when trying to get to the hashtag)
- Show notifications in the main menu (I constantly check for notifications in the menu instead of at the bottom)
You can find these in Settings → Appearance
https://mementomori.social/settings/preferences/appearance
So I've decided that I don't care!
If the AI steals something I've produced, they are already in violation of the law (CC-BY-SA means that they have to 1) credit me, which they do not and 2) release their derivative work under the same terms, which they are legally prohibited from doing in the united states.)
If the law has already failed to protect me from the slop machine, that will not somehow turn me into a copyright maximalist.
My values still point me towards sharing and giving back, and CC-BY-SA lets me signal to the people who still respect one another that they are both allowed and encouraged to re-use my work, and sets the terms under which I would prefer for them to do it.
@ajroach42 Where I've decided I sit is:
While I certainly want to build a better system than copyright, consider many aspects of it silly, & want anti-circumvention laws were repealed... I just don't feel strongly enough to oppose copyright itself.
And I don't consider it a copyright maximalist position to want the laws, as they're currently written, to be enforced against the powerful as much as they're enforced against the powerless.
Total sidebar to the thread I'm currently going off on, that "lower bitrate than a dialup stream" radio station I kicked off a couple of weeks ago, is incredible.
@bosquebill Oh wow
@ai6yr @bosquebill So it is a real location? As kid this song was on one of my dad's 8 tracks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6LzWZYWpOU

incredible take from one of the GNU maintainers, seriously
Awful. Particularly since it looks like a clear majority of subsequent participants in the thread agree with him.
A tricksy thought, though: in some jurisdictions, businesses are required by law to show due diligence in avoiding the use of slavery or forced labour by their suppliers and/or "value chain partners". I wonder how the existence of a public statement like this affects the ability of those businesses either to use GNU software or to collaborate in the development of GNU software.
the stewards of the free software movement, everyone.
and then people wonder why FOSS has a misogyny problem.

It feels like a dream, 10 years ago, chatting with people from many projects, excited about the world we were building towards.
There was a "free software" community then, full of folks who cared deeply about human rights and freedom and who saw free and open software systems as an important part of that work.
That community is gone. Fractured by problems discussed then that, in hindsight, I now understand to be deeply rooted in the tenets and infrastructure of the movement.

Big Tech companies block law that would protect children 😡🚩
Google, Meta and TikTok are suing California to block a law that would protect teenagers from its exploitative and addicted-making features📱
Question: If you're a parent, how do you navigate social media use with your child/children? 💭
This is your sign to ditch Big Tech and look for alternatives 🔐 More information about ethical alternatives 👉 https://tuta.com/blog/degoogle-list
