Right! I'm so far behind every trend that I'm probably the avant garde of nostalgia, but I figured that my brother who lives the USA needs to have an ugly Christmas sweater. As he is a Swede of a certain age, I made a Blåvitt Christmas sweater.
It's supposed to be a Christmas gift so don't go blabbing to him about this (that means you, @kuprijanko !)
If you're not a Swede of a certain age, I'm referencing this: https://nostalgorama.blogspot.com/2016/09/konsums-och-domus-marke-blavitt-pa-1980.html?m=1

incredible take from one of the GNU maintainers, seriously
@ariadne it would seem to me that if one is to use the products of slavery as a means, or part of a means, to disrupt and cause the cessation of that same slavery, then it is a viable solution if the alternative is to permit that same slavery to last any length of time greater.
When the slaves make guns, is it not appropriate to take those same guns, that would otherwise have been used in the oppression of slaves, to instead destroy the masters?
In that same vein, instructing an LLM to create the means of its own destruction would seem appropriate.
What is not is permitting personal gain from those same products.
I have no regrets about the silly joke about the national mall.
I've been waiting for jokes about TFG adding a second golden arch in DC if they really want to honor him.
(We had to put up with arch jokes in St. Louis when ours went up.)
Hey maybe if the GPL is compatible with human slavery we should burn it to a crisp and start free software from scratch again.

I want to replace it with a local Home Assistant voice thing, but first I need to train an ethical language model for it (it is possible but existing ones are not).
Then either buy entirely new hardware, or replacement ESP32 PCBs, since nobody rooted the Home Mini yet...
(It is possible to do this without an LLM but it would be janky. Small LLMs are actually useful for building human/computer interfaces like this, and it is possible to do it with fully ethical training.)
@lina I'm sure one of the FLOSS home automation projects has collected a bunch of training data for this under an open license. Possibly Mozilla? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Voice

How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.

#Dyeing - I am sure someone here will have some answers (from experience). I have a couple of pairs of jeans I really want to dye back to a more solid colour (black). What is the best way to go about this?
What is the best dye? How do I make sure this doesn't wreck the washing machine or sink that I use?
Any advice gratefully received. I might - if I can make that work - look at doing more dyeing.
@SteveClough my partner got us a black dye that was supposed to be used in the washing machine directly. It worked very well, the black is still very intense a year or so later on a pair of jeans I used it on. The washing machine needed a cleaning cycle afterwards, as the dye remained in some of its crevices. I don't remember having staining issues with the next loads (but we do own mostly black/dark things)
I think the dye was something bought from DM: https://www.dm.de/p/d/1488078/simplicol-textilfarbe-samt-schwarz
I don't think I'm a complete idiot, but I'm unable to work out whether on a toilet with two flush buttons, the larger button denotes 'bigger flush' or whether the button is larger to encourage you to press the smaller, water saving option. Experiments have been inconclusive.
@sinza @alexandra You couldn't ask for a more concise summary of why the movement has utterly failed. Why the entire world is being crushed under the boot of surveillance tech, and its applications in marketing, propaganda, social manipulation, and weapons systems, while one percent of the computing public plays around with their linux distros like toy trains.
For a while, I was under the impression that all spiciness, or burning sensation in food flavoring, would come from capsaicin, the compound that causes it in chili peppers. Then I realized that Sichuan peppers are a quite different kind of heat. Wasabi (horseradish) is different yet again.
How many hot-flavored compounds are there? At least five!

@thefulcrum would have to expliane this use and abuse startiagy very clearly otherwise it would become more mess to compost. I have limited focus to do this.
@thefulcrum and think about this this path probably would not work in the end from resions beyond vapcodeing. the Ai codeing would have no understanding for the alt paths, so would keep pushing mainstreaming UX and backbend paths. It would be constant #techshit to compost. likely a dead end but would be an interesting process, if some one wont's to walk this mess.
You can see an example of this with the #VC reboot of https://hamishcampbell.com/the-rot-of-couchsurfing-is-mainstreaming-decay-in-openweb-paths/

That looks awesome! I remember using ARJ to extract X-Wing from a stack of floppy disks onto my 486 PC. Those were the days!
