I've been carrying around an idea for a federated code forge for a while. Two things sharpened it recently: Tangled's post on the federated code forge, which builds a forge on the AT Protocol, and a Jujutsu workshop (Korean) by Seongmin Lee (@boltless.me), who works at Tangled, held at @turingappledev.

My version would build on ForgeFed, the #ActivityPub protocol for code forges (spec), so that repositories, issues and merge requests federate the way posts already do. The idea is early enough that I haven't even come up with a codename. What I want from it, roughly:

• Git and Jujutsu (so-called jj) as equal clients. Not Git hosting with Jujutsu support bolted on, but a forge that understands both, so what Jujutsu is actually good at, stacked changes, becomes a first-class unit of review instead of a pile of separate pull requests.
• No owner layer. Since the point is federation, one instance represents one person or one organization, permissions are managed per server, and a repository lives at forge.example/myrepo instead of forge.example/owner/myrepo.
• A migration path off GitHub that keeps the history. Importing the code is easy; importing the issues, pull requests and discussions with their original authors attached is the part that matters. I'd keep a placeholder for each GitHub account and let whoever owns that account prove it, after which the instance swaps in their fediverse actor, so attribution carries over. How to express that claim in ActivityPub is the part I haven't figured out. It may need a new FEP.

Where this stands: I haven't read the whole #ForgeFed spec, Fedify doesn't ship the vocabulary yet (fedify-dev/fedify#751), and I have too much else going on to start soon. If you've run a forge or implemented ForgeFed, I'd like to hear whether any of this makes sense.

We just finished Small Prophets. What a lovely show. I was looking for another recent comedy people were recommending, but I can’t figure out what it was? I’d love recommendations.

It may be a tough pill to swallow for many, but human-like linguistic fluency is actually just an extremely difficult but still-tractable math problem that only takes all the world's computational - which because of physics, means real - resources to solve.

Meanwhile your own beautiful brain can do the same for several days on a few glugs of water and £3 pasty from Greggs.

@krst @drewdaniels @pippa Then the drama shifted to Atlanta where Thrashers ownership forced the NHL's hand by publicly saying they didn't want to own the club anymore. And then a mysterious rival bid from "The Balkan" was suddenly in play (which was BS to drive up the bid). Oh and then when the deal was almost done a last minute surcharge by the NHL on relocation which was quickly squashed by a phone call from David Thompson to Gary Bettman. It was basically, I'm old money f around and find out

@ludovic @RogerBW I suspect that Gygax based this on how far he could walk in 10 minutes without getting out of breath. You mileage may vary!

BONG, BONG, BONG, BONG, BONG, BONG, BONG

Foggy today by the sea.

The trouble with taking these on the phone is that they end up very over sharpened and flatter to deceive on an HDR screen.. but here we are.

Pic 3 has had perspective adjustments on the phone as it was very wide angle and distorted, which has introduced some artifacts.

@alexandra First they came for the illustrators, and I did not speak up, because that's out of scope of the Four Freedoms.

Then they came for the translators, and I did not speak up, because the Four Freedoms are politically contentious and we need total unity outside of that.

Then they came for the QA and testing volunteers, and I did not speak up, because honestly they always seemed a bit gay to me, and is that stuff really valuable like code is?

Then they came for me, and I had nobody in the 4F Big Tent with me except other people who watch Asmongold streams. Where's the unity, people?

EDIT: well there's a reply that demonstrates what GNU apologists have to offer in spaces of civil conversation. Blocked lmao

@chris
I wonder how this plays with GDPR 🤔
