Votes are not private and never will be.
There have been some discussions about whether Threadiverse software should only federate out the number of votes and perhaps some anonymised voter IDs, rather than information that identifies individual users. This would prevent vote snooping via sites like Lemvotes. However, even if something like that were implemented, instance admins would still be able to snoop on their own users if they so wished. So imo, it’s better to just accept that votes are public information.
Personally I don’t see the issue with it. My principle when it comes to voting is upvoting stuff I want others to see and only downvote things I don’t think anyone would want to see (like spam). So if for some odd reason someone is interested enough to check my voting history, I don’t care. What’s the worst that could happen? Someone on the internet disagrees with my votes? Oh no! How will I ever survive?!
As a side note, Lemmy’s developers seem to have a strong opinion that voter information shouldn’t be displayed publicly. For example, here’s an issue they opened in the Mbin repo. While I disagree with their stance on vote visibility, Nutomic has a valid point there: Lemmy doesn’t mark voting activity as public when federating it out, so there’s an argument to be made that other software should not display individual votes coming from Lemmy.

@diondiondion @Edent Mastodon's bottom bar moves up and down randomly, galleries zoom and pan don't work properly and are unusable, and sometimes scrolling gets so sluggish I have to restart the browser (this one maybe specific to the Pixel 10?).
@dukeboitans @Edent Thanks! I know about the glitchy gallery and hope we can fix that soon. Haven't heard about the bottom bar and am not experiencing that myself, it might be worth creating an issue for that on GitHub or https://community.joinmastodon.org. The sluggish scrolling sounds like a long-standing issue caused by keeping a tab open for a long time. Happens on all browsers and is very hard to fix. :-( But I hope we will, one day.

How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.

I understand this sentiment, but adopting a dog from a shelter is a very complicated process here.
They want to do at home inspections and interviews, and you are not even guaranteed to get the dog you wanted.
A lot of people adopted or bought dogs during the pandemic, then abandoned them not long after, so the shelters made it a lot more difficult.
I'm not sure I would have met their inspection as I was a hot emotional mess at the time.
@dansup same for the UK generally. With the added problem that if the shelter doesn't have a verified history of an animal living with others (dogs cats whatever) they won't give them to homes with them.
Getting a dog when you have an older dog is like pulling teeth.

Well they aren’t private and it doesn’t matter
Researcher Derik Kauffman discovered that #Apple maintains a hidden, undisclosed multilingual list of approximately 100,000 words and phrases that its iPhone keyboard blocks from autocomplete and swipe-typing suggestions. This list, referred to as a digital "#greylist," does not prevent users from manually typing these terms but makes them difficult to enter via predictive or spoken features.
Some #censored words include slurs, swear words, and references to drugs, sex, and violence (e.g., "fuck," "al-Qaeda," "Auschwitz"), derogatory or critical political slogans such as "dictator Trump," "sleepy Joe," "right wing conspiracy," "Tibetan independence," and "United Ireland."
Different languages have specific blocked terms, such as "Modi braggart" in Hindi, "immigration too high" in French, and "occupied territories" in Hebrew.

@MissConstrue [He said French speakers could not swipe-type the French phrase “immigration too high”] this seems like a strange phrase to point out, like I am sure there are other things in french they have blocked that could be pointed out so why choose this one
Since I was working from home this week, Hector changed to the hammock at the window near my desk.
It was very cute, especially since he snored quietly the whole time.
