I love seeing the clear interest in #NetBSD around here. \o/
@futurebird
@BigJackBrass @gleick I think the picture standals for itself in mild absurdist humor.
But for actual backstory, this is the @acc academic computer club mascot @torben that I put in Mandelbrot's lap for a photo after a guest lecture at Umeå University.
@maswan @BigJackBrass @gleick @acc @torben
I was overthinking it. One can simply be happy with a photo of Mandelbrot being happy with a big stuffed chick. What more could we want?
If you set "Al Capone" (uppercase I) in a sans-serif font it can read as "AI Capone" (lowercase l).
That thought got out of hand last night, and now there's a nine-page noir comic about a robot racketeer who gets done for hallucinating his tax return.
Yep, I used AI to make a comic about AI, which is either the point or the problem. I'm not sure it was a good idea, or how it will land, tbh.

I wrote a WonderSwan (and, partially, GBA) test ROM for the RTC chip present on some cartridges. Have fun, emulator developers!

@kodsnack Efter turerna kring proton så har jag funderat på om självhostning inte är rätt alternativ. Jag vill verkligen inte göra det, men det verkar inte som det finns en lösning som inte är moraliskt förkastlig.
OK ... so ...
I used to belong to organisation X. For that membership I create a bespoke, and I think fairly unguessable email address.
I have now received an email:
From: Google <noreply@google.com>
To: (unguessable)
Subject: Verify your email address
What are the plausible scenarios? Here's one:
* Organisation X has lost control of my email address;
* The email address has been obtained by bad actors;
* Bad actors assume it's a general email address and try to log in to Google with it.
Can you think of others?
HAHAHAHAHAOhmygod Harry Hill has made a short film and it is absolutely unhinged

@TheBreadmonkey .
Unhinged is certainly one description. I am at a loss for any others
@deviantollam If 80% of my findings were purely "humans wanted to be helpful to me despite me being a bad bad attacker and your camera/card system is kinda shit," I wonder how much they can use that 😂
@m4iler @deviantollam to quote Dungeon Crawler Carl, “the minute we stop helping eachother, is the minute we stop being human”. It’s important that you highlighted that people will always be faulty when it comes to acting as an access control device and, similar to phishing training, any training or exercise that is meant to remind the people not to do the thing will always have a short expiration and diminishing returns. So the access control needs to be physical, and some of it was and that was what was worked at stopping you in some cases, and it was also what was unsuccessful in other cases and it’s where improvements can be made, access cards and cameras, maybe a sign in system with actual checking.

Moderators can also see votes on posts in their communities. I assume instance admins can do the same for everything.
Do people clean horses?
@TheBreadmonkey You can take a horse to water, but a pencil must be lead
Today, we celebrate Marie Skłodowska-Curie's birthday and her remarkable achievements as the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first scientist to win it in two different scientific fields.
Her name lives on through the EU's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, supporting researchers across Europe and beyond.
👏 Here's to Marie and the next generation of scientific pioneers!
@EUCommission Go to hell for chat control, border control, authoritarian biometrics
I hate the commission, it is beyond redemption
The individuals should build better councils with their friends and organise to prevent cooption from russia, america and BRUSSELS
Yeah, I recall seeing that. Hepburn? lol
@darth_hideout Mrs Columbo always reminded me of Catherine Hepburn … 🤷
Note that in my experience "community" is often a trap, unless you define really well what it means to be part of it. Usually the term is all too easily used, while expectations about the community vary wildly.
Proper expectation management is a requirement to avoid all kinds of problems to software development projects, as they grow in popularity and use.
This holds from the earliest start, where a developer might say "this is just my pet project", or "doing this as a side-quest", or "to add to my portfolio to enrich my CV while looking for work".
This avoids entitled "users", allows people to make proper selection of the software they want to use. Avoids the friction we so often see between what the developer wants, and what people expect and subsequently demand.
And the developer will be more aware of their own stated needs for the project. E.g. when it becomes more popular, and now they decide to go all-in and try to earn a living from it.

not. at all. i consider anything i put here akin to standing on my nearest street corner during rush hour, shouting into the darkness
confused how anyone could think anything otherwise.
@quincy Well, actually, the use of computer was really controversial back in 1976. Still is. In many ways, it's an example of slop from well before the slop machine was invented.
The really bad part of the proof, including the improved more recent ones, is that it's so tedious that a human really can't fully manage its understanding without a computer. The Supreme Fascist would outright laugh its submission out of The Book.
On the other hand, maths is, somewhat uniquely, a discipline where genAI can do good work, partly because there's no copyrighting a proof; people aren't required to make random changes in order to be allowed to prove the same theorem themselves, and partly because many interesting proofs can be rigorously verified even if they were originally boiled up in a witch's brew of slop. But there's still the question of human mathematician's employment; maths is also a discipline where human practitioners will absolutely be needed even if a machine should eventually be able to do all their work.
I'd say, at the current moment in history, these projects aren't helpful even if they find theorems ... if these (loudly marketed) efforts are merely *perceived* as making mathematicians unnecessary, how quickly will a society that has never understood the intrinsic value of working in a non-applied field move to defund all maths research and education?
