If programming were a thing in the Star Wars universe, WFH technicians for the Death Star would be like, what if I spent the weekend making a website for the Rebel Alliance, maybe then I'd feel better about my job?
A #BonfireNight art task for you, followers. Which figure from #NewportCounty history would you most like to see recreated as a guy atop a burning pyre? Jerry Sherman? Bobby Madley? Sketch your guy and send us your drawing! No AI slop allowed, it's for noodles.

People Gathered Around a Large...
Hope is not a strategy.
MAYBE they care. MAYBE they'll fight nazis. MAYBE they'll put people who did crimes in jail. Maybe, maybe, maybe...
but if I were you? I wouldn't bet on maybe. I'd be ready to ride these mutherfucker's asses like Zorro until I got what I wanted.
These folks aren't your fucking friends mate. They're not even who they were a week ago - they're people with power now. In America.

@Pepijn @broknheadphones A crow sounds the most independent and least expensive for upkeep. They can have crow friends in the neighborhood and not depend entirely on me for companionship.
Also, I'm least worried about them getting hit by a car, the other options might have trouble navigating the roads here.

Fediverse
If your “anti-abuse” security requires your software to be closed source, then your software is not secure. Well built software can be open source, and still secure.
You imply that your code could not prevent abuse if it was known, so, no offense, but that code must be pretty bad!
I like the fediverse because it distributes power. I, as a user, have the power to choose my instance, choose my moderation, choose the structure that my social interactions are built upon (threads based, microblogs, etc) and if I dont like something, I have the power to change it. Thats why open source is such a perfect fit to that model. Closed source federation then, sounds to me like you didnt get it.
Are you receiving email notifications from Mastodon which you don't want?
You can edit your account's email notification settings using the instructions in this guide:
(If you're on mastodon.social the instructions will be slightly different due to its experimental interface. Click ⋯ next to your profile name and then "Settings", then follow the guide.)
How do I feel about routine security disasters from vibe-secured supply chains.
How do I feel about my performance being judged by how much I use tools that routinely lie to my face.
How do I feel about using to systems that strip-mine a commons I played some small part in building just to sell a superficial imitation of it back to me one token at a time.
How do I feel about having my career options hinge on my complicity.
How do I feel about living on a burning planet.
How should I feel.
where you keeping your abominable creation
@BDA @checkervest I think the plain white room sounds most comfortable. I don't want my creation to turn on me. If they'd be more comfy in one of the other options, then I'd change my answer.
@skyfaller @BDA I like the tube because you know they’re staying hydrated
I think about a decade ago I wrote to one of the Guix mailing lists and argued that it was dangerous to have password authentication on by default and was overruled by people who were like "but how would I ssh in before I copy over my key"
I see it still defaults to on =_=
The time for PasswordAuthentication no may have come by now, with cloud hyperscalers normalizing cloud-init and automated ssh authorized keys provisioning in particular.
It's like ssh pubkey auth itself; once you learn about it, you don't want to miss it, and wonder how you ever bothered with juggling passwords in the first place.
It's time for #Noisevember #4 on November day #5. https://faircamp.thurk.org/noisevember-2026/4/
Long and irritating! Just as Noisevember should be.

Godot
Showcase: Diablo (1996) remade in first person in Godot 4, with its original level generator ported to GDScript
Hi Godot folks, Danny here from the Diablo 3D team. We’ve rebuilt Tristram and the first Cathedral level of the original Diablo as a first-person game in Godot 4, and the free demo is out.
A few Godot notes:
- The original level generator is ported to GDScript and outputs a 2D tile grid; a builder turns it into 3D walls, arches and vaulted ceilings at 1 tile = 2 m, so every seed is a new walkable dungeon.
- All game rules live in JSON tables generated from the original data by a Python pipeline; GDScript only implements the formulas.
- The UI is laid out in the original 640x480 coordinates and scaled by one factor, which made ultrawide and 4K support almost free.
- Strict typing (Variant-inference warnings treated as errors) caught a lot of bugs early.
What’s in the demo:
- Tristram rebuilt in 3D tile for tile from the original town map, with all the townsfolk and their original lines and voices
- Cathedral level 1, laid out by a port of the original level generator (a new layout every descent)
- The original combat, monster and item rules (to-hit, crits, block, durability, affixes)
- Warrior, Rogue and Sorcerer: sword and shield, hold-to-draw bow, Firebolt, Charged Bolt, Inferno
- The 1996 interface layout (plus an optional Modern skin), ultrawide up to 5120x1440
It’s free for Windows (1.83 GB, Vulkan GPU with 6 GB+ VRAM). Download and screenshots: diablo3d.com
Happy to answer questions about any of it. Feedback on performance is especially welcome.

That puts twin booster rockets on our plans to push citizen journalism and hyperlocal newspapers into the spaces where the legacy media are failing.

@mikegalsworthy great to be working with you on this!
Here’s what The Counteroffensive is reading today:
So far, 42 bodies have been recovered from the rubble following the Russian attack on the site in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region, on Nov. 2.
Another 33 people may still be trapped under the rubble. Rescue efforts continue.
Democrats have secured victories in both chambers of Congress.
They can now pressure Trump to seek congressional authorization to continue the war in Iran, approve new aid for Ukraine, and limit or suspend support for Israel.
