I've been feeling taciturn about the big old blue wave. Glad, but nervous because there is so much work to be done and I don't know if it will happen.
But there is one part that just fills me with joy. It makes my skin prickle with happiness.
All those little gerrymanders that backfired. (this is where they tried to rig state houses for more Republicans, but instead made districts more competitive.)
mmmmm... isn't that just. It's lovely isn't it?
@futurebird delicious!
“AI is not inevitable... It is wielded like a cudgel against workers, and workers can control how technology is used at work.”

Senate 2027 Majority Leader Whip Count
Prospective whip count of 2027 Democratic Senators who are likely to support and oppose Chuck Schumer for Majority Leader. Those listed in opposition have either made public statements that he should be replaced or waffled when asked if they would support him. Those listed as supporters have either stated their support or are pretty solid moderates generally known to be in the Schumer camp.
Note: Individual Senators listed in the reply below.
@mastodonmigration Every time someone allows Schumer near a microphone, he sets the Democratic party back a decade.
@alpenglow @drahardja @inarticulatequilter Yep. Etsy’s biggest investors include BlackRock and Goldman Sachs. Everything changed when they went public in 2015. This isn’t surprising if you’ve been following their trajectory over the past decade. They keep the indie handmade facade but they’re just another extractive corporation.
The states that are getting people excited about the national popular vote compact are swing states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada. The reason swing states exist is winner-take-all. Those states ignore about half of their voters every election because they like being swing states. It gets them attention, and concessions. It's a way of throwing their weight around at the expense of the minority of their voters. Swing states don't have to be swing states, they can stop whenever they want. All they have to do is split their electoral college votes based on the results of their election, instead of ignoring the slightly less than half of their voters.
If there are no consequences for the damage Republicans have done, the laws they've broken and the whole "naked attempt to supplant democracy with theocratic fascism" thing, then there's no reason whatsoever for them not to come back better funded in a few years and try again.
Representative Jeffries here has decided not to learn the single most important global political lesson of the last fifty years.
@mhoye We are a country of laws - that's what we voted for - not a country of ignoring corruption. Learn the lesson of Trump being allowed back on the ballot. Jeffries is dead wrong and being disingenuous when he phrases it as revenge vs accountability and justice. Unless this statement has been taken out of context.
Obligatory mushroom selfies!

Yeah, nuclear shield, largest trading partner, willingness to suddenly start foreign wars.. Lots of factors make us care unduly
It occurred to me then that *most* people seem to think that animals only have value - and deserve protection - if they're 'owned'. Indigenous, ambient wildlife has - in most people's minds ~zero (or even negative) value. The crucial, unique value of our biodiversity has *not* been well explained to the mainstream. What do you think? @joncounts
2/2
@lightweight @joncounts I think there's a difference between an invasive species - which, so far as I know, the the cat is, in New Zealand - and indigenous wildlife.
And I think indigenous - and unowned - wildlife is valued in a lot of places, including especially here in Canada.

I now have enough answers from you all for a 2nd poll!
What might you want to build using Alonzo?
So I have some idea of what to expect.
Initially Alonzo will support modal UIs, but with your help I'm happy to extend it to support more than that!
From which episode might this come?

“‘They mentioned a little bit during the campaign: Why does Trump spend so much time on the White House?’ said the president, starting up again. ‘Well, first of all it’s very little time and second of all, I like it, it’s good. For me it’s relaxing… I love construction.’
“For once, he seemed completely genuine. Here was an old man retreating into his glory days, seemingly completely unbothered by being resoundingly lame-ducked by voters from coast to coast, and in fact perhaps relieved that he was entering an effective retirement.”
What sort of room has no windows or doors?
