If anybody did a fake job interview with me and got access to my work laptop, they'd get access to some danke memes not much else. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/binance-says-fake-job-interview-led-to-63-billion-crypto-heist/
Is there a way to install software in 2026 without it being all rootkits?
@bnuuy I think the ones funding them expect (pretty plausibly so) that they’ll be able to pay for more compute.
GenAI is something that actually gets better when you throw a lot more money at it.
A single dev with a month of time and 300.000 Dollars can do things. They may not be as good as if he had paid three developers to do it in a year, but he didn’t need three developers to do them.
So if devs say “we don’t do that, it’s evil”, he’ll threaten to slop it.
@resuna @fogti @ketanjoshi85
@ArneBab @resuna @fogti @ketanjoshi85 it's so bizarre how these people whose one job is like, knowing their way around money, just keep not stopping to think to themselves "wait, won't all this money we spend on training/hardware/compute end up costing more than just hiring the top experts in the world and ask them to build something pristine, what's up with that?"
i get that compute is the (or at least it would be on a small scale) more predicable, more deterministic investment, and business types like solving problems with money (if the only tool you have is a hammer...), and therefore problems you can solve by just throwing more money at things. but are they really so dense, so centered on getting everything their way, so fundamentally incurious about things as to not notice that the hype just doesn't quite add up? unfortunately for all of us, it seems so.
the hype bubble is going to cast a very long shadow, that is so much larger than the bubble itself.

@kboyd ya it is in IANA and there does seem to be an update (2026e?) to make the change but it is not in the general stable apt update stream yet
@ai6yr FWIW:
"There is no warning or heads-up. Google is apparently doing this without any kind of prompt."
Below is the email I received almost a month ago.
The "learn more" link at the bottom leads here: https://support.google.com/android/answer/7521240
Sounds super gross (as you'd expect from Google), but they did give an un-proofread heads-up about their grossness.
Normal day at the office, making a course about #CSS
@mia Finally, a sweetened breakfast cereal for me!
"So, what's your solution then? Would you rather ban [insert random piece of offensive technology here]?"
"Yes."
"What?! But that's impossible!"
"No."
@r_alb Just be a little Amish, you know, for the species.
The other thing that kills me about the evangelical pastor that they interview is his reference that they aren’t electing a priest or a pastor.
Evangelicals are willing to overlook Donald Trump and Republican politician moral abomination, but have no generosity for the people they decide to target. It’s like they’re willing to overlook any sort of horrifying behavior, pursing political power explicitly to defame And persecute the marginalized.
@GhostOnTheHalfShell One of the most horrifying conversations I had, back before 2020, was with an extremely, extremely religious woman, after I seriously asked her about the rape/grab-her-p*** episodes, and she was "god works in mysterious ways, he forgives those who sin". Anyway, I disengaged with that ridiculousness and will have nothing more to do with those people.
(which is a different flavor from the so-called Christian people who saw those kinds of those things as DESIRABLE in a leader, indicative of their power... i.e. in their mind, a GOOD leader for them is one who can rape/abuse women, etc. because it shows how much power they have... and they wanted to be on the side of that power. My read of some of the men was "oh, I wish I could be like that, abuse/have any woman I wanted, I'd do that if I were as powerful as this guy I am going to elect") 🤢
@mans Coolt!!!
@doktorzjivago Det lustiga är att en del av de som gör olika firmware har aldrig programmerat förut, de kör alltså vibecode med AI stöd.
Det känns lite märkligt, fast också roligt.
PSA! You can step away from Computer.
You do not need live updates.
You can find out tomorrow.
It's fine.
@jwz You’re joking, right. It’s election day. I’m actually watching for any shenanigans.
National news tends to locate things in Texas to the county, for some reason. Particularly with elections, since they're administered by county governments. So, here's a Texas counties primer, in case you need it tomorrow:
Harris county (pop 5.1 mil) - home of Houston
Tarrant county (pop 2.6 mil) - home of Fort Worth
Dallas county (pop - 2.6 mil) - home of Dallas
Bexar county (pop 2.2 mil) - home of San Antonio
Travis county (pop 1.4 mil) - home of Austin
And to save you some math, that comes out to 13.9 million, of the 30.5 million in the whole state. So if something fucky is happening in these places, that represents 45% of the entire population of Texas.
Just fyi
@jenniferplusplus iirc, Texas also has one of the counties with the *smallest* population in the US, to counterbalance the ones you named.
Well that's going into my Nice Comments folder
i was wrong, Binance hack wasn't Cursor vuln - it was a much longer op
@davidgerard Soo.. Did this one enggineer do a job interview and related assignments for another company on the Binance-company laptop (quite bold move i must say) or do they not have company devices and it was a private one, byod style? (Which would be even worse, considering the company we're talking about here)

You know those paintings you do with your 2 year old when you fold the paper & make a butterfly, well I do that with my toilet paper.
I’m very proud of my 25yo, who did research on all the races on his ballot, used that research to make sure he convinced his friends (most of whom had never voted, or voted in, lets say, questionable ways in the past) to vote wisely, and got them all to the polls together to make sure they voted.
That’s how this stuff is supposed to work.
