In 2008 I wrote a networking utility program for Linux. It's still maintained and used. Take the first letter of every sentence in its (rather long) man page and it spells "Never gonna give you up" etc etc. Nobody has ever mentioned it.

Fediverse
This is the kind of funding the Fediverse actually needs. Better tools are great, but without people making things worth watching or listening to, we’re just building increasingly elegant infrastructure for arguing about infrastructure. Pairing creators with developers is a genuinely smart move.

@lapcatsoftware I interpreted it to be a response to Google's recent move to make Android less open;
see also: Play Integrity, AOSP development changes, RCS, new APK restrictions, etc.
[i.e. it was entirely predictable that Google does not actually care about openness]
@jjtech That's a stretch, with no evidence for your interpretation.
I suspect I will always think it was a mistake to allow author styling of `<select>` elements and sub-elements, and yes, most other form inputs as well.
I acknowledge the reasons for supporting it are valid and real, and also that I’m likely just being an old sourpuss. I nevertheless continue to believe user interaction elements should be consistent with the host operating system, so that users subconsciously know what a thing is when they see or otherwise interact with it.
Ah well.
@Meyerweb
Particularly inputs as complex as date and time inputs, though many host OSes and browsers need to do a better job at usability and accessibility there.
Benny, almost every thinking person knows you’re the dumbest motherfucker in America but it’s astonishing to watch you continue to prove it every single day.
Good luck, America.
You’ll need it.
Google Will Turn Off Search for Schools That Reject A.I.

Crypto- and AI-focused super PACs have poured nearly $250 million into this year’s elections. Tonight we find out what it bought.
Here’s my guide to the races to watch, where the money went, and which results could embarrass the industry: https://www.citationneeded.news/2026-election-guide/

I'm reading about a Word "clone", apparently made by the same people who recreated "clones" of Adobe's software suite.
I don't know how legal any of this is, and I'm not going to get into that. But I can't help smiling at the reactions.
When they started pushing AI, they told us we would lose our jobs, whether we liked it or not. That AI would replace us, whether we liked it or not.
Now that someone has decided to apply the very same principle to their products, suddenly they don't like it anymore.
"You can create new games, but you can't recreate existing ones."
Hurts, doesn't it?
And that's the point. The problem isn't the technology itself, but the way certain sharks use it at other people's expense. When they're the ones on the receiving end, and only then, ethics suddenly becomes a concern again.
@stefano The AI bubble needs to burst already. I'm sick of it.
What could go wrong?

@Haubentaucher Naja.
Was will man erwarten?
Slopfest 2k26 continues with an election, a fanfic fiasco, and World of Slopcraft.
Can't wait until Nov 6th and the U.S. stops talking about politics because they're too busy taking off work and bringing a lot of services to a hault to commit virtual crimes.
All I'm saying is that I hope no one needs a nerd that day.
@ramsey @Crell @linc Yuuuuuup. And honestly doing this from a place of spite is worse than the tenor of the ArtCraft family of projects. At least those are "what if, and hear me out, we rewrote it in Rust" with somewhat of a business model stacked on top for when the hype dies down and maintaining the software gets boring.
@ramsey @Crell @linc "Occupy" energy rings really hollow when these folks almost certainly are using tooling by one of two companies that would love nothing more than to be both monopolies (out to consumers by saying their cheaper competitors are dangerous) and monopsonies (out to suppliers so they stop spending 50+% of their top line on compute).
I'll checkpoint my rant there. More ranting available on request :)
so hrtcafe.net went down due to a coordinated terf/far-right action.
and so this is as good a time as it gets to make even more mirrors of https://git.gay/hrt/pages/ (or the github repo this is a mirror of already, if you want to touch github).
clone it, set a cronjob to do a pull every week. set up a web view like https://hrt.soap.systems if you have the means to do so and the willingness to deal with potential terf interference.
trying to shut down online resources hosted by annoyed transfems, that’s totally going to work and have the intended effect, right?
edit: people are asking if I know what actually happened, what kind of attack it was and such.
I didn’t see a lot of confirmed info about it (and didn’t really look too hard either), but judging by what I’ve read so far, I’m assuming a combination of doxxing, pestering the hosting and threatening legal harassment.
supposedly the person who hosted it took it down themselves to get the heat off of them - and I can’t blame them, that’s reasonable, no one doing this should ever feel expected to stand up to being personally targeted. that’s what we have a community for. they can back off to ensure their own safety, while we deploy a hundred more mirrors.
