Plus, the staff’s picks, too.
A boxing match played in reverse, where one dude wakes up off the ground and begins exchanging touches with another dude and getting progressively healthier (sometimes with breaks in between) until they both back away slowly from the ring one at a time

‘Anyone can be a super-hacker now’: The world faces a #cybersecurity reckoning

The story of Linux should inspire the Fediverse.
"The year of the Linux desktop" has been a joke for 25 years - a quarter of the century! Yet slowly, and with a persistent following building for linux and supporting it, it's reaching a point where it's no longer something to laugh about - it's a valid choice for many people. Hell, my father (who is 81!) uses ZorinOS, which I installed when windows became too laggy and frustrating for him on his aging PC.
Similarly, if you tell someone that fedi can replace facebook/instagram/x for them, they will probably not take you seriously - most of the people they want to interact with are not here. In the very same way that the apps that people wanted to use on their operating system were not on linux some years ago. Things change - we can change them!
Linux is 35 years old. ActivityPub is less than 10!
Let's build apps and communities for the widespread adoption of the open web, for the fedi revolution. This won't come by itself, we have to prepare it. But we will - we already are!
Linux had a number of benefits. It had a very clear vision of what it should achieve: offering an open source proper operating system alternative. And it had a dedicated BDFL to oversee and steer its evolution process. During that evolution a helluva professional organization structure and development process was put in place to ensure things didn't go off the rails (an organization that receives criticism from fans for its corporate-commercial tendencies).
The fediverse lacks those things until now. It is a wholly chaotic grassroots environment with laissez-faire haphazard development in all directions based on a protocol that is too loose, too flexible to ensure any kind of real interoperability. The accepted work method of post-facto interoperability leads to Big ball of mud and Whack-a-mole development anti-patterns.
Fediverse can certainly be inspired by Linux. But it must address these shortcomings. And in a way that fits its culture and values.
@chjara honestly that'd probably be thermos, escalator and an entire list's worth of drugs like aspirin and heroin

everything makes sense if you disregard both the progressive theory of history and the cyclical theory of history, for the theory of history where everything is shit and turning into worse shit
Speaking of, why does it say "QR code", surely "code QR" would be the correct word order. Like if we're just importing compounds with the English word order might as well just speak English. She says, about French, in English.
@sknob
Je tiens à dire que je n’ai absolument rien à voir avec cette cyber attaque !!!!!
@BigTittyBimbo really just goes to show how elections can be bought with those millions of pounds in illegal donations. this kind of precision targeted messaging is what that buys
@pisscotheque is this the russian media influence I've read so much about?
Sorry to report that one of the Danfoss freezers affected by yesterday’s cyber attack was keeping Mariah Carey in stasis. She’s out, people.
It arrived too late for Halloween, but never mind!

Whenever I start a home improvement or DIY project, I immediately contact my best friend for advice knowing full well that within the hour, he will be at my door ready to take control while I make tea and pass him tools.
@fesshole Is your friend Hank Hill, but British?
Maybe he's born with it
Maybe it's Maybelline
It's worrying to see people not realizing this is satire.
Anyway, PSA to no one in particular: sewing is an extremely, extremely useful skill to have, of PHENOMENAL usefulness, and it's a shame it's not respected as such (at least, not in the US -- and based on the extremely low value placed in sewing worldwide, probably a global thing). So glad the many folks here have pointed me in the right direction on this. And it's also a shame it's been pretty gender-role limited. (at least for me, a straight male...) I highly recommend everyone and anyone at least learn the basics (repair and some modifications), but if you're into math/puzzles/3d modeling/etc. it is a natural fit to go well beyond that.
@ai6yr I learned sewing from a couple of places (my mom & sisters a bit, 4H, school). It really bummed me out that at my teen’s school, which has a very broad arts curriculum, they offer nothing in fiber arts. No sewing, knitting, weaving, etc. He’s doing a theater class this fall that focuses on costume design but the teacher was surprised when I asked about sewing - much more about thrifting (fine) and glue. Missed opportunity.
