@baldur yay, more work for you. Sorry not sorry! (Would premium subscribers get it for free?)
@pkra Yeah, definitely. Feels like it could work as a substitute for setting up an archive with sign-in and that kind of complexity.

And of course my first instinct is to be "Oh, of course, of course, I'll just walk into traffic then."
No, I told her if she wanted the second chair she was welcome to it but I was fine where I was. She said I was everything wrong with America.
@srol proud of you

My youngest (18) and their friend tonight
all homemade, very proud.
@ShadowJonathan@tech.lgbt like i think every fortune 100 person that has a lot of tech background is just extremely illiquid and will jump off a building when an economic dip or depression happens
@ShadowJonathan@tech.lgbt @ada@zoner.work
I'd like to see those jumps
PPG expects its paint sales for data centers to triple this year from last year, the Times reported, far outpacing the company as a whole. Painters are specializing too. In a sponsored interview with Bisnow, Graydaze Contracting CEO Alec Kinard said his data-center-only painting division, DataCoat, was on over 20 such projects across six states.
If you invest in, build or just watch the AI build-out, I'd look past the chips.
A passage from the Times, quoted on Techmeme, says the same buildings are also boosting sales of gravel for their foundations and floors, plus the wires and cables that carry power and data to the servers. (Somebody has to sell the gravel.)
Every AI headline about chips has a quieter one about paint behind it.
That coating is called Steelguard 951, and Buildings magazine lists it at up to four hours of fire protection, applied up to 3,500 microns thick in a single coat. PPG segment manager Kristine Gallagher wrote on the company's site in May that building codes increasingly call for multi-hour fire-protection coatings on structural steel where office and operations staff sit near the servers.
The money is following the coatings.

At PPG's test building, known as "the bunker," researchers aim torches at painted steel panels, and the Times watched one coating swell from a millimeter thick into a black crust nearly 10 millimeters tall. That crust kept the fire from reaching the steel and softening it. PPG chemist Paul Fenton explained it to the paper this way: "Just like a toasted marshmallow likes to expand."

AI Data Centers Now Need Their Own Special Gray Paint...
The AI boom has reached the paint aisle. The New York Times reported Thursday that tech companies are painting data centers with gray coatings on top of gray concrete and steel to resist fire, rust and static electricity, which has made them a fast-growing market for paint makers. Techmeme's summary of the story puts those coatings at $3 million to $8 million per building, citing JLL.
The star product puffs up like a marshmallow.

@futurebird Bill Maher again?
@GrapheneOS BTW I have /e/OS and they haven't deployed a fix for the eMudhra “4” thing yet, from 2 weeks ago, I had to do it manually. Not a good look for a company that claims to care about privacy
@jamn /e/ doesn't have patches for critical remote vulnerabilities from months and even years ago. They ship the bare minimum Android Open Source Project patches with weeks of delays from the bulletin dates which is already inadequate. They barely ship Linux kernel patches and don't do it across devices. They often lag years behind on shipping the kernel, firmware, driver and HAL patches. That's even the case for Pixels where they lag a year or more behind due to not keeping up with updates.
"Sam Altman sympathizes with mathematicians, but..."
-sigh- Do I have to tap the sign again?
STOP ANTHROPOMORPHIZING AI EXECUTIVES.
For fuck's sake, they just keep overselling these things. Do they *really* expect us to believe, 4 years into this tsunami of horseshit, that an AI executive can "sympathize" with human concerns now?
Sam Altman is as capable of sympathy as your toaster is.
@p
He will not divide use.
Stay prayed up!
Imagine being a flounder and swimming around and minding your own business and then the English language comes out of nowhere and claims your name for a derogatory verb.
@Alice My name is Bill.
Weezer’s “C.E.O.” music video is pretty funny.

@molly0xfff That reminded me of my bank asking me to authorise myself to manage all transfers on behalf of myself. Was Kafka just the first one to notice this stuff? 🤔
Binance hasn’t REcovered $6B+, it’s COVERING it (reimbursing customers from company funds). Some was frozen, but Binance is not likely to recover even half.
Bad headlines like this are a big part of why I started covering crypto. Generalist reporters on deadline far too often end up repeating company spin.
@molly0xfff I wonder how much there is to cover. It apparently makes around £500m a year in profit, so absorbing that much has got to hurt.
The company assets, which could easily cover it, are presumably owned by other people..
