@josch Well, there's probably a ton of "pickup artist" forums in the training data. 😑
BREAKING NEWS: A new vulnerability has been discovered in all versions of PHP. Details will be forthcoming, but I’m told that, under certain unusual conditions, it will execute PHP code. This has numerous exploitable consequences, not least of which is that it leads to more PHP code in the world. The details are currently embargoed but the team responsible for discovering the vulnerability report that a similar class of problem exists in GCC and Clang as well.
@david_chisnall Long live PHP!
Stillstand durch Technik.
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.
Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.
Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.

“These re-interviews are consequential,” a leaked email seen by 404 Media reads.

@404mediaco I knew it was over when proton launched Lumo! You could almost feel the vibes get worse and worse ever since!

Reddit's r/opensource bans AI slop, and quite a few humans for good measure
Meanwhile on reddit.
Honestly kind of sounds like lemmy.world mods like Jordan Lund tho…
To get a project featured on the subreddit, developers now need to show it has been actively maintained for at least a year, has an established community, and has at least three contributors, give or take. Student projects such as note-taking apps and PDF viewers aren’t welcome either, and developers can no longer use the subreddit to find people willing to help maintain their software.
That creates a chicken-and-egg problem for independent developers, who apparently need an established community before they can use an open source forum to find one. Even projects with no AI involvement could fall foul of the rules. One Reddit user pointed out that their nine-year-old project, which has more than 300 GitHub stars and dozens of resolved issues, would no longer qualify because they’re its sole contributor.
The moderator also imposed a minimum Reddit account age of one year and requires significant prior contributions. Anyone who attempts to post and then contacts the moderators seeking an exception risks being permanently banned and muted.

@alisynthesis
I just noticed precisely what you said and I fully endorse it: costumed bears, not just people in bear costumes. That •would• be cool.
@mcmullin haha, absolutely! BRING THE CHAOS!
Testing Ladybird, a truly independent web browser with an engine built from scratch, not based on any existing engines.

To initialize its "sparse" memory allocate Linux validates one of its structs have a power-of-2 size, allocates a memsection if necessary & flags each (both via a helper, & more in turn) updating numerous tables while validating the structure of heap-space, validates (via another helper) that there's a bitmask we can use, iterates over sections (via a helper & more in turn) carefully locating the 1st valid one, dereferences the section's "NR" & bit-extracts a "NID" property, ...
1/2?
... chooses a pageblock order (via a caching helper), iterates over the present sections (indirectly reusing some of those helpers), defers to another routine to init NIDs, & on x86 outputs some debug logs.
For each present section Linux likewise retrieves its NID, skips ones which match `nid_begin`, likewise inits that nid, & updates some locals including `nid_begin`.
1.5/1.5 Fin for today! Tomorrow: Early-initialization of NIDs for the memory-allocator.
I finished Here Comes Niko! today so I could possibly include it in the next Archipelago I'm gonna play. 👀 Got all achievements too, of course, hehe.

I’m not sure they were, or that they should get to claim such. His racism, stupidity and sex crimes were public record and they wanted him anyway.
He usually failed at business but the idiots think he’s “good at bidness”.

The issue is less the size and more that it is a centralized platform with no possibility for communities to effectively “go somewhere else” if they are having a bad experience on one platform/website.
That is only partially true.
For one, they could make a new sub, which people have been doing for like a decade, long before Lemmy was even thought of. Most of us know of at least one sub that got its start this way, before we had ever heard of it (or rather, we used to, before we collectively chose to forget all that!:-P).
For another, people can migrate off of Reddit entirely. There are multiple options to choose from, the top ones being Discord, Bluesky, even X, and as always Facebook, Insta, Tiktok, YouTube, etc.
All of these are exceedingly poor choices for various reasons or another… however, if history shows us anything, it is that people will do ANYTHING other than come to the Fediverse. Just read pretty much any Reddit post discussing Lemmy and you will see words like “leftist trolls”, “extremists”, “toxic AF”.
Also remember that even Reddit offers more freedoms in some ways than Lemmy. Examples include the ability to ask questions of the mod team via modmail without having to individually DM each (most often inactivated) account in turn, the ability to continue conversations begun on a post that is later removed by a mod from the sub’s feed (Lemmy instead gaslights you, pretending that it never existed and you are crazy for attempting to return to it), and the ability to not continually receive notifications via DMs or comment replies from toxic trolls (ahem hexbear ahem lemmygrad ahem, cough), without having to individually used-block each account one by one by one by one by one by one by one by one by one by one, and truly almost infinitely since they keep spinning up alts all the time.
If we offered a VIABLE alternative, then perhaps they would come here. But when faced with man vs. bear, they chose The Man (we here are the bear, I am sadly coming to realize).

Slop generators are *so good* that people need to be forced to use them.
@rysiek glad I gave up on proton before this happened.
