at least problematic ppl tend to be proud about being problematic, so it's easier to spot them

@littlerao Being open about your reasons is still a good thing.
We knew it was a risk closing our Matrix Room but we did write about it. Most folks understood, it did cost us, but it also helped us.
Folks on here do appreciate honesty.
@littlerao Depending on the project and it's community spaces opening up a conversation and the reasoning for moving can start with a post.
Giving folks time to adjust to the change as well.
The community may split, but what you have to ask yourself is, what do I want that community to consist of in the future?
Because we can see with some "big tent" projects what the danger is there.
By the way #Metal fans, for the month of November Transcending Obscurity have once again made all their digital releases Pay What You Want on Bandcamp. They’ve got lots of great stuff but I particularly recommend the new Cryptorium album.
Also the Haxprocess and Resin Tomb albums out next month can be preordered for $1.
Happy Headbanging!
@ajroach42 Unsane was made on an iPhone.
@miah Indeed, that is the film I discuss in the thread.
Although Soderberg has actually shot several films on iPhones at this point.
I talk about it a few posts up: https://retro.social/deck/@ajroach42/117582016904760374
If you're running a public Mastodon server, it's really important that you have a plan for closing down gracefully *even if you have no intention of closing down*.
Having a plan in place means your members don't have to worry about your server suddenly disappearing, as they know they will get plenty of warning if it happens.
Here's a step-by-step guide to closing a Mastodon server gracefully (and much of this applies to any Fedi server):

"Hans Globke und der Bundesnachrichtendienst haben 1961 einen Agenten im Eichmann-Prozess in Jerusalem platziert. Die Aufgabe dieses Agenten: die Namen von prominenten westdeutschen Ex-Nazis wie Globke aus dem Verfahren heraushalten. Das ergibt sich aus BND-Akten, die Henke 65 Jahre später als erster Historiker ungeschwärzt untersuchen konnte."

There is a future timeline, I guess, where programming becomes similar to poetry.
"Wait, what?", you say. "But poetry was never a utilitarian, economic thing."
It absolutely was. Pre-literate societies pretty much ran on poetry. So many of the tools of the poetic trade are basically tricks for getting an unassisted human brain to remember things.
"Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
who's the fairest ..."
You can remember the rest because it is a poem.
Before writing, poetry was how culture got transmitted. In the "Viking age", poetry was one of the main means of inter-community communication; and if you wanted to diss a rival without fighting a duel, you'd compose an unflattering poem about them.
Poetry doesn't serve any utilitarian purpose anymore, because we have writing now. We've had writing for so long that it seems weird to imagine that poetry was once a big deal; a load-bearing pillar of social survival.
And maybe if the LLMs end up writing all the utilitarian corporate code, there is still a place in our culture for weird people who know how to express themselves in a way that machines can interpret. Maybe agent skills and specifications become the literature of the new world, and mindmade code becomes its poetry. If no longer commercially valuable, it may remain an anchor to an older way of thinking, with its own aesthetic and its own traditions - and possibly also still some character-building value, at least for a specific kind of character.
But what the fuck do I know. I'm just a programmer. I'm not creative.
It's okay if you need to write down a checklist or put a reminder on your phone to make sure you do self care daily.
I’ll never stop thinking about the woman interviewed while her child was enjoying the new Sunset Dunes playground, saying he loved it but she’ll still vote to destroy it b/c she commutes down the Penninsula ONE DAY a week and it would save her a few minutes

Well, not all of them. Some of them are a stain on this earth.
Let’s keep it respectful.

The year is 2342.
The car-brained residents of San Francisco’s Sunset District have continued their tradition of recalling politicians and voting against parks, something they have done for the last 320 years.
Nobody should have nice things, they say, because I need to drive one minute faster

August 8, 1964: “Beverly Hills: Luci Baines Johnson, youngest daughter of President Lyndon Johnson, dances the ‘Watusi’ with actor Steve McQueen at a celebrity-studded ‘LBJ’ - style barbecue sponsored by the ‘Young Citizens for Johnson’ here August 8th. The President's pretty 17-year-old daughter and her sister, Lynda, have agreed to make five personal appearances on their father's bid for re-election.”

This is like a scene out of Mad Men.
We've been releasing movies made on television cameras to theaters for more than 60 years.
Your smartphone produces a better image than a 60 year old television camera.
You can make a movie.
In 2002, a movie made with television cameras and released to theaters won a bunch of awards.
Your smartphone probably produces a better image than a 2002 television camera (and, even if it doesn't, you can get a camera that does for under $200.)
You can make a movie.
In 2019, a major Hollywood director just started shooting movies on iPhone 7s.
Stastically, you probably have a camera as good or better than an iPhone 7 in your pocket or in your hand as you're reading this.
You can make a movie.
@ajroach42 Unsane was made on an iPhone.
sincere question: is it better to call today knowing i'll get voicemail they might check tomorrow morning, or wait until tomorrow when i'm up and the east coast has been going for a few hours? former, i assume?
this is also a trick question because staffers never, ever answer the phone in either of my senators' office, so it will be voicemail in any event
@inquiline good question. On something like this, voice mail and email are great -- it's really the number of calls and letters that matters.
