Import your Google Maps reviews to Mangrove
Did you review places via Google Maps in the past? @mangroveReviews@mas.to now offers a way to import your past reviews, which means they will also appear in CoMaps in future maps!

For a while, I was under the impression that all spiciness, or burning sensation in food flavoring, would come from capsaicin, the compound that causes it in chili peppers. Then I realized that Sichuan peppers are a quite different kind of heat. Wasabi (horseradish) is different yet again.
How many hot-flavored compounds are there? At least five!

@onepict (context, am BDFL of a project without any other contributers just yet) to me it's also a question of when to go for a different governance model? as soon as the first being shows up with a typo change?
Also how to ensure the long term health of the project once handed off to the community? Cause I've seen enough projects which were dear to me get ruined by "the majority" that didn't care.
So how to not hand the project to beings who ruine it?
Am genuinly lost on those issues.

At the Agentic Internet Workshop yesterday, talking about personal AI, I remembered a 2007 talk and have resurrected it at https://jonudell.info/hosted-lifebits/.

@judell EDUCAUSE is wretched at archiving. When the New Media Consortium went out in 2017, EDUCAUSE snapped up all the assets to keep the library and the Horizon project going. All the web sites, media I built when I was with NMC 2006-2011 including archiving their earlier sites back to the 90s, were yanked so all URLs redirect to not founds in their library.
The internet archive has been savior like again, I found two years of podcast audio I did with Gardner.
Any laptop made within the last ... 15 years is probably capable enough to run a modern linux distribution (this is not the place to complain about linux) and a video editor like kdenlive and, having done so, it becomes as capable or more capable than basically any television studio prior to the proliferation of NLE.
A single decade old laptop (one that can still be reliably picked up on the used market for $100 or so) can reliably be used to produce *and distribute* film and television, as long as you have access to a decent camera (and you probably do!)
When I start ranting about this stuff, it's useful to remember that the 2019 film Parasite was edited by Yang Jin-mo on a mac running Final Cut Pro 7.
Final Cut Pro 7 was released in 2009 and stopped receving updates in 2011, and won't run on versions of Mac OS newer than OS X Yosemite (released in 2014, updates ended in 2017)
That means Jin-Mo was almost certainly using a laptop from 2015 or earlier to edit the 2020 best picture winner.
and, while new codecs and file formats have been released since then, Final Cut Pro 7 running on a 2015 macbook is just as capable of editing in 2026 as it was in 2019.

@stsquad TTS/STT is solved, the issue is a clean language model to go between them. I want to train (fine tune) one based on KL3M.
HA has a training dataset for it, just need to put the pieces together (and probably extend the dataset a bit)

@ericphelps @acf @pkal @sstephenson What a terrible take! Yes, if you find out that one of your contributors has a history of misconduct, you can and should reject their future contributions. If their patch disclaims it was made with slave labour, you are fully capable of rejecting it on those grounds! Just because you can't know everything about everyone in advance doesn't mean that nothing should be done! It's perfectly reasonable and possible to just react according to a set of principles!
@Gargron @acf @pkal @sstephenson A very libertarian position, to make individual choices😉. I can't disagree with that even though I didn't list it as one of my alternatives. It doesn't have the large social impact most other people are advocating for, but you're absolutely right: Regardless of what everyone else is doing or considers acceptable, we must make our own decisions.
@mcc I'm pretty sure qcow2 would make that impossible, but if it was a raw image instead, it should be doable.

@automattack @freebliss these are important questions, about anything we do, and i think we all make choices, we know not to be perfect. AI Data centers are impactful, and i hope we'll end up not needing too many of them, using more local models as they get better, but for now i consider that they are less of a problem, than many things we have normalized long ago, like animal agriculture, and fossile based energy production, a renewable based grid, alleviates some, not all, of the harm, but we have to favor that anyway.
The question though, as i understood it, was about software practice, and the outcomes on software quality, and it seems than rather than defending the initial claim, we are now turning to different ones, that are worth entire discussions, and as you can see i can also broaden the discussion / what about it, which is unlikely to help us conclude about that.
@tshirtman @automattack feel free to discuss everything else that's morally bankrupt about AI right now (plenty to go around :)) but please remove me from the thread if you do. thanks!
#Etsy has updated their Terms of Service that forces sellers to allow the use of their photographs, videos, and text to train #AI. There is no opt-out.
It seems bonkers to me that Etsy, a website which ostensibly sells human-made creations, is forcing sellers to enable AI to learn from and subsequently copy their own products. I guess they now feel that they have enough market share that people will not leave over this.
