Invisible software that becomes a lightweight frame that supports human creativity and achievement.

Silent, unobtrusive, yet always helping exactly when needed and no more than that.

It really can be like that. And you could be a part of making that kind of software too... oh... were things ... different.

*continues to cry at the bar*

Piefed is fine too. The drama there is a nothing-burger. The tankies are just pissed off that Piefed has better moderation so they can’t troll Piefed servers the way they would like to

Fortunately, piefed’s controversial feature was a checkbox in the settings that an admin can easily toggle on/off, unlike Tesseract that had a hidden hardcoded list. And as you are probably aware, our .zip admin gives us users the autonomy to block stuff ourselves, so that wasn’t really that big of an issue.

@jalley We got very slightly more. (No photo because ours uses the tipping-spoon measuring style instead, but.)

The problem is that when the software is really really really good, you just don't even notice it anymore.

I see YOU triket. I see YOU p5js.

And yes, this gets very messy when every corporation on the planet is feeding everything everyone has ever made into the statistically averaging slop machine.

I understand why many people would not want to share freely in that world.

But the output of the statistically average slop machine is hot garbage. No matter how polished it gets, no matter how undetectable it gets, it will remain pathetic.

@hongminhee @boltless.me @turingappledev

If you've run a forge or implemented ForgeFed, I'd like to hear whether any of this makes sense.

I know someone who does - @elle
Their project is https://codeberg.org/activitypub-rs/activityforge

@mattsqu despite a lower resolution than modern nice I think I'd love having one again so if you could grab me one if/when you see it I'd happily pay you back.

We’re not out of the dark woods yet, and won’t even face the big boss until January. Stay vigilant!

@futurebird This person I follow, @alcinnz , does an absolutely genius thing, in my opinion: he writes "hypotheticals". Things like "If I was designing a smartphone today, what would it look like?". This way he:
- talks about what is important to him, without spending time for "boilerplate"
- builds a community
- has time to explore what is already available, talk about what is good/bad about it.
- gets feedback (and moral support)
- spends reasonable amounts of time per project (instead of "getting a second unpaid job"), has a chance to later choose what subjects to go deeper in.

He has accumulated a whole collection of these on his website/blog: https://adrian.geek.nz/from-scratch/

Piefed is fine. Otherwise, PyLova is a fork by a different dev team.

this is literal misinformation

People are upset when the find out the Lemmy lead devs are like straight up authoritarian communists.

Mostly Third-Way-Reddit-liberal refugees who don’t realize they’re not progressive just because Fox News calls thier party “radical socialist leftists” constantly, these are the same people screeching that America only votes for leftists for Senate some places because there wasn’t another choice and that what b the country really wanted was moderate Dems.

Also the Piefed devs; didn’t they get caught hardcoding a block list into Piefed or something? I know there was a lemmy front end that did that (Tesseract; I made the list yay!) but not long after that Piefed got caught doing something similar but I don’t recall exactly what it was; all I remember was that I decided I no longer trust Piefed and I won’t use it. Shit I’ll try and search it and see if I can come up with a better answer

@vascorsd it's the drip

They’re Tankies.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie

You probably want to avoid their instances like lemmy.ml or lemmygrad.ml unless you like to root for the tanks in the Tianamen square massacre.

Dude is a full tilt tankie, that’s not being a weirdo it’s being a fascist.

shout out to the lemmy developers for not making us be stuck on the other site

shout out to mastodon devs for making us have a better life than on Twitter

shout out to the pixelfed devs for allowing a actual photography platform to exist

shout out to the peertube devs for helping us not be stuck on youtube until the end of time
