While overall homelessness decreased, especially for the unsheltered, the number of homeless children and families rose dramatically....

How much are you on #Mastodon?
Oh, just about every day
This is a reminder to get your annual vaccinations.
I wanna talk about the political movement of the Open Source community. If you spend enough time on fedi, you surely will have heard *plenty* of criticisms of what's going on in Open Source, and rightfully so.
So I'm curious, what do we think the Open Source community *should be doing* in order to achieve important progressive and anti-authoritarian goals? What should the next generation of programmers be thinking of and working on in this space?
A special rule: You're only allowed to say "don't X" if you have at least as many "do Y" recommendations. Preferably, I'd like to see more do's than don't's.
Boosts welcome

How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.

I assume there’s no privacy whatsoever, and I wouldn’t believe anyone who told me otherwise.

Happy #caturday to Maple, just added to my household this morning. Six year old tortie who's a bit uncertain about things at the moment.
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @fristi@56k.dile-up.nl yeah of course, well it is mainly done by two professional cooks (my friend's parents, volunteers) so that is why the lasagne was so good
@jcoglan Hey, actually, I do have a pretty specific suggestion:
- Play 868-HACK first
868-HACK is a very stripped down version of the game, 868-BACK pretty much incorporates the entire first game while expanding on it, and on reflection it's possible that 868-BACK "assumes" you played the first game, design-wise. Also story-wise it's implied BACK happens 10 years after HACK so aesthetically it's easy to imagine HACK as your college years, a dark room, an old computer, BACK as the "future"
@jcoglan HACK is very hard and it takes awhile to complete even a single run through the Mainframe. But once you've finished a few runs in HACK, a switch flips and you "get it" and you're instead trying to see how many runs in a row you can get. BACK, of course, expects you to complete 15 (!) runs so you will not complete BACK unless you can get into that mode.
I think if you play HACK at least until you hack the mainframe once, you will find BACK makes a lot more sense.

Hot take: not disclosing and carelessly spreading respiratory illnesses is ethically equivalent to not disclosing and carelessly spreading STI’s.
Instead of fireworks everyone should run about during the day with those guns with the flag that pops out that says bang. This is a very good idea and I cannot see any problems with it whatsoever.
@TheBreadmonkey Do you wanna be in my bang gang

Just because I think such differences for one and the same digital product, is absurd!
Imho there's nothing that justifies a sum of 13.000€, as it's not any more work than for another .cat-TLD that costs just 300€.
@fasnix @iworx Yep. The domain itself is more or less just a line in a database. Effectively zero cost. The hard work to make a domain work is done elsewhere (DNS server, hosting, email server). It's a very neoliberal business scheme, in my personal opinion. Artificial scarcity and total freedom to dictate a price. And by creating new top level domains, unlimited new opportunities ;)
