We shouldn’t be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.

Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them.

Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information.

Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the UK Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

Srsly

Oh, woe on woe! Oh, Death, why canst thou not sometimes be timely?

@cestfleuve Tonight, an overhang; tomorrow, a whole long of hangovers.

Ukraine seems to have resumed their campaign to destroy nazi Russia's oil infrastructure, and in a big way.

Nice.

@carmenlisandrette I pondered it but it would still need either TOP or Te Pati Māori too so there seem like some potential challenges.

Honestly I think the most *sensible* coalition would be Labour/National - way easier to manage a mere two-party coalition than 3-5 parties. It'll never happen because admitting how close they are in policies would kill them both but theoretically....

Votes are not private and never will be.

There have been some discussions about whether Threadiverse software should only federate out the number of votes and perhaps some anonymised voter IDs, rather than information that identifies individual users. This would prevent vote snooping via sites like Lemvotes. However, even if something like that were implemented, instance admins would still be able to snoop on their own users if they so wished. So imo, it’s better to just accept that votes are public information.

Personally I don’t see the issue with it. My principle when it comes to voting is upvoting stuff I want others to see and only downvote things I don’t think anyone would want to see (like spam). So if for some odd reason someone is interested enough to check my voting history, I don’t care. What’s the worst that could happen? Someone on the internet disagrees with my votes? Oh no! How will I ever survive?!

As a side note, Lemmy’s developers seem to have a strong opinion that voter information shouldn’t be displayed publicly. For example, here’s an issue they opened in the Mbin repo. While I disagree with their stance on vote visibility, Nutomic has a valid point there: Lemmy doesn’t mark voting activity as public when federating it out, so there’s an argument to be made that other software should not display individual votes coming from Lemmy.

@arratoon

Seems about right

Good morning. I’ve been taking my evening meds later so I don’t crash out so early, but that means I’m struggling to get up in the morning lately. I feel really clobbered by sedation. It never used to be this bad. I feel like I can either be functional in the evenings or in the mornings but not both, which doesn’t seem fair. I’m worrying about how I’ll cope when I get back to work.

This morning I have the delights of a visit from a Mastodon friend, we are meeting irl for the first time. I’ve got special biscuits in! This will be I think my third or maybe even fourth Fedizen I’ve met offline.

Not a lot else to report today. The sun is shining. We’ve got a wash on.

Have a superlative Saturday!

Data has to federate, so nothing is going to really be private like you mention. I think it’s unreasonable to expect anything otherwise. I don’t see a point to hiding votes because of this. If someone starts stalking or harassing their voters for some reason, have a reporting system and handle that.

Moderators can also see votes on posts in their communities. I assume instance admins can do the same for everything.

Not at all, and I believe that’s the point.

They’re not private at all, I’ve never been under the illusion that they were.

I like it, have some guts, stand on business. If people want to downvote they should be willing to attach their name to it, internet points are fake anyway.
