How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.
Votes are not private and never will be.
There have been some discussions about whether Threadiverse software should only federate out the number of votes and perhaps some anonymised voter IDs, rather than information that identifies individual users. This would prevent vote snooping via sites like Lemvotes. However, even if something like that were implemented, instance admins would still be able to snoop on their own users if they so wished. So imo, it’s better to just accept that votes are public information.
Personally I don’t see the issue with it. My principle when it comes to voting is upvoting stuff I want others to see and only downvote things I don’t think anyone would want to see (like spam). So if for some odd reason someone is interested enough to check my voting history, I don’t care. What’s the worst that could happen? Someone on the internet disagrees with my votes? Oh no! How will I ever survive?!
As a side note, Lemmy’s developers seem to have a strong opinion that voter information shouldn’t be displayed publicly. For example, here’s an issue they opened in the Mbin repo. While I disagree with their stance on vote visibility, Nutomic has a valid point there: Lemmy doesn’t mark voting activity as public when federating it out, so there’s an argument to be made that other software should not display individual votes coming from Lemmy.

i think it's a monumentally cruel, shortsighted, and self destructive thing to do to ourselves and our children to make this the sole remaining means of accessing information.
I am inexplicably terrified of spiders. Well, it's not really inexplicable. It's quite 'splicable - them terrifying beasties. However. I'm trying to be better with my spider pals. That being said - for some reason, the ones that have broken through the barrier are these little gents. I don't mind them at all. In fact I'm quite amiable towards them. These little fellows (whom for some reason I've gendered as male, despite clearly being female for some ineffable reason) are right up my straße and I'm quite content to have them in my world. Let us cohabitate, my little chums. Weird, eh?
Mr Wizen took a photo of the arachnid before moving it outside.
The genus Phoneutria includes some of the few species of spiders known to present a threat to humans. Danger to humans comprises not only toxicity of the venom, but also such factors as the spider's capacity and proclivity to bite and deliver a dangerous dose, and proximity to human habitation. These spiders' wandering nature is another reason they are considered so dangerous. In densely populated areas, Phoneutria species usually search for cover and dark places to hide during daytime, which can include houses, clothes, cars, boots, boxes, and log piles, where they may bite if accidentally disturbed.

i would have called an exterminator and stayed with a friend.
also i feel the need to look under my bed, but am not in the mood for the drama.
£1M idea 💡
robot spider terminator.
OK, I have things coming up that I really, really need to get done.
Time to think of some new side projects.
No one is ever going to come up with a better title for a movie than this. My suggestion would be to stop trying. Just make your movie title a long string of random characters

It is important to make distinctions:
- as politicians they can use and campaign in whatever platform they want.
- As Government officials, they must be forced by legislation to use a Government Federated instance so everyone has access to their communication and no Big Tech oligarch has the power to decide how these messages reach the population.
@Tarbh I think @Cyberoutsider's comment was about you tossing in Dixons (by any name) when fesser said "a well known energy company". (that's at least how I read it)
@Mabande @Cyberoutsider Ah, fair.
I seem to recall them saying "if we lose, we're all going to jail."
It would be wrong to disappoint them.
OK, I just saw someone posting about a project called Terra Tempora (https://terra-tempora.com/?ref=mastodon), which claims to let you "scroll through history", searching for battles, treaties, and "tracking civilisations".
Unfortunately the whole thing is a classic object lesson in why we shouldn't entrust our understanding of history to data scraping and AI processing, which is pretty clearly a core basis for the project. Here's some examples.
Good morning from Saratov in Russia where Putin's oil refinery is wondering if war with Ukraine was a good idea.
Have an excellent day in the free world! 🌞
To incite the citizen to the active practice of simple sabotage and to keep him practicing that sabotage over sustained periods is a special problem.
@SinclairSpeccy i'm clearly the oddball here lel
@central Nah you're not the oddball I'm a broadband kid too so we're holding down the young end of the thread together :P.
Wifi is just how most people get online now anyway
@pjf first past the post babyyyyyyyy
The tweet that crashed NASDAQ and AI stocks in the US and Asia. Lmao. I say bring on aggressive regulations for this AI bullshit. The first step must be forcing them to prove they obtained explicit permission for every single word, video, code and image they stole from others. We need to claw back every single penny from Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic and the rest who stole data to train their shitty AI. They were so happy to see job losses & acting like brats. Fuck all of them
@nixCraft beside that, the next step has to be, to make them responsible for their products and not shift the responsibility to their customers. E.g. a model does damage to others, the model creator has to pay the damage.

I wish my votes were even more public. If I’ve taken the time to downvote your bullshit/nonsense, I want you to know it was me. Same with upvotes.

They’re not private at all, I’ve never been under the illusion that they were.
I like it, have some guts, stand on business. If people want to downvote they should be willing to attach their name to it, internet points are fake anyway.

I mean it was on every news station and website in existence, non-stop for months before the cities were emptied. It was literally the biggest news in the world.
If you didn’t have time to watch the news you probably wouldn’t have seen it on any social media or official outlet either.
But I digress, as your main point remains correct, governments should have sovereign platforms for which to communicate with the public that doesn’t require users to submit ID and facial scans and phone numbers, and click the boxes with fire extinguishers. They should just be able to read it.
