This post is written on https://normals.me and delivered to !fediverse@lemmy.world over #ActivityPub, so if you are reading it the basic plumbing works. Now let me explain what is this.
Normals is a forum with communities, threads, and questions with an accepted answer. It is a single instance, not software you can host, and the core is closed for anti-abuse reasons. The federation module will be published separately with implementation notes (FEP-67ff).
What federates today Every community is a Group actor following the Lemmy model (FEP-1b12). Follow @selfhosted@normals.me or any other community from Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon.
Posts and comments go both ways. Replies from your instance appear in the thread on Normals, replies from Normals go back to the origin.
Remote content is labelled with its origin, links back to it, and is never copied. Media loads from the source.
Signed fetches, so it works with instances that require authorized fetch. NodeInfo 2.1 is up.
Policies, in case they matter to you, it has no ads, and no paid reach, and of course no AI training on posts. AI crawlers blocked by default, public mod log with reasons, and no automated removals. Numbers at https://normals.me/transparency so please take a look.
If something from your instance shows up wrong here, or something from here shows up wrong on yours, reply with the URL and I'll fix it. Andy Piper mentioned NodeBB uses the same group model, if anyone runs a NodeBB instance I'd like to test against it, if possible.

@feld you're correct but he's also correct that generally the mitigation for uid0 total control is MAC, which, as he mentioned, is a ton of code to do that, which is an increase in attack surface. the other mitigation is dropping privileges which isn't as bad I admit.
@feld if you drop privs it's not really root anymore right, I am not sure where that leaves anybody in the debate. it's true it's more complex than just god-mode account which is in your favor. but also again, it's a bolt-on to the model.

Just now I've been looping through the repeaters I have saved, no replies.
Especially annoying when I call, get no reply, a couple of minutes later someone appears to call their mate who replies immediately and they proceed to chat.
Edit, one popped away for a moment so I called in, got ignored. Screw you guys I guess.

This was my experience of repeaters
Seemed like if they don’t already know you, they just won’t talk to you. If you do get one talking and a mate pops up, they drop you like a hot rock - but that’s just humans being more comfortable talking to their own tribe!
If I had more time, I’d push through and get known - but I have other stuff to do!

@sun the top response seems to have been written by someone (Doc) who thinks that uid 0 == root == all access to everything which is not true. there are many ways to have a uid 0 / root user that can't do fuck all. their understanding of what is possible in a unix-like system is literally stuck in the 70s.
