@raganwald
Verbor Vinge's novel "Rainbow's End" has the Friends of Privacy who poison the well ofPII by posting lots of plausible junk about people to hide the reality.

Looking to understand: what is the significance of this?
It means the project may be vibe coded (LLM generated with little to no verification of what the output is); meaning it’s a lot more likely to contain security vulnerabilities and privacy concerns.
And that’s ignoring the ethical concerns of using AI in addition to the lifespan of the project (vibe coded software often isn’t maintained very long).

@GrapheneOS do you know if this will result in these devices being "verified" for things like Google wallet tap to pay?
@tarajdactyl GrapheneOS can't be certified by Google so it won't be approved by the Play Integrity API. That means Google Pay still won't permit using it. However, there are multiple tap-to-pay options available for GrapheneOS in the European Economic Area and UK including Curve Pay. You don't need Google Pay for tap-to-pay in most of Europe. If you aren't in the EEA or UK then a common alternative is using an Android Wear watch such as a Pixel Watch for a Garmin watch for Garmin Pay.

They won’t, because they’ll not understand the code at all, or barely understand it, and then there comes the whole deskilling problem.

I don’t know if there’s empirical data, but at least from personal experience I’ve noticed a lot of those projects are straight up gone after like a week. Like I’ll see it posted in some Lemmy community, and I’ll check it again later and the repo just plain doesn’t exist any more.
A lot of others I see were created in a very short time, and then months later there’s a dozen open issues and no response from the repo owner.

Not the original commenter but still, here are lots of them.
How much does it change each year?
@alienghic A little (but he added the LIRR this year, so this time there's actually a lot of new material).

Why am I even using Linux and the accompanying inconveniences when gaming when with all the slop in the kernel and elsewhere in the stack I might as well just cut out the middleman and run Windows?
I hate that I'm asking myself this question, but here we are.
@thomholwerda could be worse, you could be a Mac gamer.

@EUCommission who the fuck drew the chemical reaction in the lower left?
note how
- the cyclohexane ring magically looses six protons to be come aromatic (where did they go?)
- my first thought at that OOOH group is that someone misspelled COOH; except the OOOH group the somehow reacts to OOH + H2O, while the other OH group just goes missing. in total, we start with 4 oxygens, and end up with 3, violating preservation of mass.
is that really where we want the state of education to be? superficially plausible-looking, but just bafflingly wrong upon the slightest scrutiny?
someone who knew their chemistry *would* have noticed this.
