Every three months or so, the YouTube algorithm decides that all I want to see is clips from the movie MONEYBALL. I've never even seen MONEYBALL. But I clicked on a clip once, and Google knows that I am a middle-aged white dude, so presumably it just assumes that MONEYBALL is a load-bearing component of my personality
The comedian and podcaster Jamie Loftus used to do a bit where she talked about MONEYBALL as the centerpiece of what she called "the Boyfriend Criterion Collection"

Fediverse
Hi from normals.me. If you can read this, the federation works
This post is written on https://normals.me and delivered to !fediverse@lemmy.world over #ActivityPub, so if you are reading it the basic plumbing works. Now let me explain what is this.
Normals is a forum with communities, threads, and questions with an accepted answer. It is a single instance, not software you can host, and the core is closed for anti-abuse reasons. The federation module will be published separately with implementation notes (FEP-67ff).
What federates today Every community is a Group actor following the Lemmy model (FEP-1b12). Follow @selfhosted@normals.me or any other community from Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon.
Posts and comments go both ways. Replies from your instance appear in the thread on Normals, replies from Normals go back to the origin.
Remote content is labelled with its origin, links back to it, and is never copied. Media loads from the source.
Signed fetches, so it works with instances that require authorized fetch. NodeInfo 2.1 is up.
Policies, in case they matter to you, it has no ads, and no paid reach, and of course no AI training on posts. AI crawlers blocked by default, public mod log with reasons, and no automated removals. Numbers at https://normals.me/transparency so please take a look.
If something from your instance shows up wrong here, or something from here shows up wrong on yours, reply with the URL and I'll fix it. Andy Piper mentioned NodeBB uses the same group model, if anyone runs a NodeBB instance I'd like to test against it, if possible.
I hope we all have fun. Cheers!
There is great wisdom in this.
@lowqualityfacts True. Also this is completely unrelated but I too have reached enlightenment.
@yatil Between 4 and 5 there's hardly any migration. Maybe a plugin update or two.
@getkirby Last time I tried it exploaded in my face, but I had no patience or urgency to figure out what was broken. I guess that has changed :D
I sincerely miss the awful, horrid, eldritch screeches of dark delight modems used to make when encountering a kindred device over the wire.
I too will screech at my friends next time I see them.

Important reporting on the working conditions of the people building all those data centers. Sure, capitalism, it's exploitative, but the degree of neglect of safety standards and human rights is staggering.
I think these are important, but I also think that the vote margin in this election is huge -- ~13% or more popular vote, and something like 80 votes in the House and 10 in the Senate. So, for me, the question is, is that enough of a signal that the Congress actually has a mandate to propose and pass positive legislation that actually helps Americans?
Especially in the Trump era, the legislative branch as an originator of policy seems ridiculous. The legislative branch barely gets anything done -- filibusters and vetoes lock up almost all legislation, except for the annual budget bill which can be negotiated between the houses through reconciliation.
As expected my #40C3 submission about "convivial software" was rejected.
"Open Source Software has succeeded. And that success created its biggest failure. Where can we go next? What’s a better future?"

@tante Try a FOSDEM main track talk?
https://fosdem.org/2027/news/call-for-main-track/
We need to bring this topic to the forefront. Of course FOSDEM is a very “open-sourcey” venue, with everything it entails, but it’s also diverse enough that you would find an interested audience—and hopefully interested reviewers.
Where can mass murderer Elon Musk go to escape Blue Texas?
Mars.
Douglas Adams already wrote the script for deporting useless people from the planet. Instead of (not actually useless) hairdressers, management consultants, and ad execs, let's deport broligarchs and technofascists.
@judell That seems unduly cruel to Martians. Can we find some planet more remote?
RNC dropped another $106,000 at Mar-a-Lago on Oct. 14.
I'm David BeOS and I pronounce BeOS "The Bee Operating System"
@cwebber I’m Johnny Appleseed and I pronounce macOS as “Macintosh Operating System” or “macOS” or “Mac O.S.” or “System Software” or System Twenty Seven or a random geographical feature in northern California or Rhapsody (if you’re nasty)
I am once again begging @things to allow us to add headings to Areas in Things.
Not everything I need to do counts as A Project™, but I’d also like some organization for these smaller tasks.
Begging.

My wife has had "We didn't start the fire" by Billy Joel stuck in her head for months. She doesn't know it's because I write shopping lists and SMS's to the catchy rhythm. *Rice pudding, cheddar cheese, selection pack of black teas…
@fesshole Worst REM song ever! You are insidious. My partner shops to “88 Lines scout 44 Women,” which, I find intimidating.
Hey, everyone. So, I asked this question because the priorities of the next Congress are being talked about right now, and a lot of the discussion is about the agenda: investigations, authorizations or lack thereof, oversight.
I think these are important, but I also think that the vote margin in this election is huge -- ~13% or more popular vote, and something like 80 votes in the House and 10 in the Senate. Maybe musl wouldn't be so bad if they accepted "slop"
