On the eve of the U.S. midterms, here's a 2024 story from Prison Journalism Project written by four incarcerated writers who've never been able to vote. "I have begun to think of everything I do in the community as a referendum. If I pick up a bit of trash, I am voting for a clean community. If I leave it there, well, that’s a vote too. If I refrain from violence, even in thought, I am voting for a more loving world. Even though the state has the power to stop me from drying off, it can never keep me from getting into the water of democracy. It’s where we live and I’m gonna splash around as much as I can," says Troy Chapman.
There is one sure way of not having your election results rigged by hackers - do it the old fashioned way.
Here in the UK we use paper ballots and pencil (or pen if you wish) to mark an X on your ballot. The ballots are then taken to a central point in the voting area and manually* counted where candidates and there reps can observe the procedure.
*some specific elections may use ballot counting machines but it is not the norm for most. The ballots are all physical.
@raymierussell Thanks for the information. I'm completely unfamiliar with even the most elementary principles of election security, because I've only been thinking about this full time for a bit more than a quarter century now.
Do you know how US elections work? Are you aware, for example, that the vast majority of US voters use hand marked paper ballots?
But thanks for the advice. We'll get right on it.
Apple’s roaming home robot may do FaceTime, switch lights on, and yell at your cat
Apple robot backed by CEO John Ternus may have hefty price tag and limited uses.

@arstechnica if it’s going to roam, it might as well vaccum.
I finally put the last touches on an Android game I've been working on for a while: Asterism, a logic puzzle on a hex grid.
Numbers count the stars around them, like Minesweeper, but every puzzle can be solved without guessing. Solve one and its stars draw a constellation.
If you like Minesweeper, Hexcells or puzzle games in general, give it a shot! Feedback is very welcome :)

@tobkum Congratulations on the release! I recently heard how much harder it is to release on Android these days so well done!
Just eaten my dinner in the manner of which Mr Darcy would seldom approve
@TheBreadmonkey Having not read or watched P&P, I assume Me Darcy does everything in a wet white shirt.
Umpteenth introduction.....I'm a frequent flyer on Mastodon and have left accounts like breadcrumbs.

One thing I've taken away from some of these things is that a lot of communities say "well we can't ban genAI contributions, because you never really know", and maybe you won't for some, though you might for a lot, but for sure some will slip through
But also what we are seeing is that vibecoders / slop artists will absolutely take their ball and leave in a huff if you say it isn't welcome here
Sometimes they'll even start a completely separate thing for them
And great! Go do it.
But yeah, placing rules of such things do work. And it does help preserve communities.
What you'll find though is that the vibecoders / slop artists will be a bit bitter that they can't participate in the "main" event. They want the respect of the place that excludes them, because of course, Claude vs Claude *isn't very interesting*. It's much more fun if there are a bunch of actual artists around, so you can elbow them out, so you can look good in comparison to them.
Wow, almost 200 people have signed up to https://getsup.net 🚀
@dansup omg I want app first 😱

An "8pen" idea I've heard of for typing is to have you draw loops starting & ending in a center position. The 1st & final side the loop is on can both give 2bits of scancode, clockwise vs anti-clockwise gives another bit. Yielding 5bit scancodes.
Using the buttons as a shift key gives a 6th bit yielding 64 keys. And there's a few gestures left over that can be used to edit text, accept/reject the text, or navigate between keyboards.
I'd have a notation for communicating the layout onscreen.

I'm actively preparing to test this idea for low-profile mobile typing upon tactile hardware. Within the next week I should have an idea whether its worth exploring further, delayed due to amateur mistakes.
But if it does work, I'd be keen to use these gestures to facilitate searching those menus.

One concern is that with visual design I can throw labels onscreen for you to ignore as you become familiar with the design. I can't do the same as I design my own screenreader...

If I cared what France wants or had any intention of paying it, France's dumbass "internet tax" would cost me 25 EUR/month minimum just to run my Mastodon instance.
If every country did the same thing, last month it would've cost me 856 EUR, again ONLY for Mastodon.
Unrelated to Mastodon, if I look at my Unifi router dashboard, I used 1.2 terabytes TODAY, just at my own house. If I lived in #France they'd want to charge companies 66 EUR for that bandwidth!
I would say I can't even imagine a stupider tech law, but unfortunately as of late there are a lot of stupid ones to go around. This one definitely ranks up there though!
It's been long enough that I think I can say this.
Elizabeth Holmes is a woman who was the CEO of a Bay Area startup. This made a lot of techbros very upset. She was going to get taken down one way or another.
That she was actively committing fraud is only incidental.
It's become so dry in Berlin that our (Polyester) human dog bed is zapping people ;_;
