@Daojoan SLA Marshall was kind of a hack, the statistics about soldiers actually firing are also pretty controversial. I think the underlying point is important but this might not be the best example.

The most depressing thing about the current bubble is that so many of the flagship ‘look how amazing AI is!’ things are things where LLMs are a pretty poor fit and other techniques work much better, but the baseline for comparison uses well under 10% of the compute, often under 1%. If you threw 10% of the memory and processor capacity at the non-LLM approach, it would work much better than the LLM approach. Yet it’s easy for OpenAI or Anthropic to burn $10M on a tech demo and incredibly hard to get anyone to spend $1M on a good solution to the same problem.
As long as money is flowing to these companies, they’re starving interesting research of resources because there’s no incentive to build efficient systems when a company is willing to set fire to investors’ money to run the horribly inefficient version for you.
Another factor is health. Active transportation is very, VERY good for your health, and the more you walk, the better it is. People who are farther away from a station get more steps per day. But there's a drop off point somewhere around 15-30 minutes away, where people start saying fuck it and just driving instead.
@evan I'm about 15min and I'm fine with that, I consider it close and walkable.
It does become a factor for one destination which is about a 45min walk. The metro ends up saving only about 20min which means it doesn't make much sense over walking. So I end up just not going most weeks. This must be some variation of the sunk cost fallacy
