@zzt I only realized after buying a pet feeder to install Localkit on and being unable to properly install it that the whole project was fucking slop.
Ended up ripping the guts out of the feeders and replacing them with ESP32s running ESPHome. The days of being able to trust open source projects are over.

We're carrying that forward. @z9mb1, @2chanhaeng and I maintain Fedify, and with @gaebalgom the four of us are building @drfed, a web platform for developing and debugging #ActivityPub implementations, with NLnet NGI0 Commons Fund support.

- buy a cheap IP camera because you hear there’s open source firmware
- the only open source firmware is thingino, which is slop
- well shit, if it’s my only choice I guess that’s it
- reach for it months later for a specific important thing
- it doesn’t connect to wifi even though nothing has changed about the network
- the reset procedure doesn’t work at all
- all of the new docs are extremely LLM slop instructing you to do things that don’t work
- all of the old docs are from 2024 and also don’t work
- the docs for doing remote access on the camera, an extraordinarily common thing if you don’t have a host that can act as a stream collector, are just the text “placeholder” and a blurb elsewhere about how I may or may not have to recompile from source to do this
- fucking hell where’d I put the flashing cable, I’m going back to stock firmware

Can we coin a fallacy name for the "just use a newer model" thing that LLM addicts subscribe to?
It's such a weird pattern. "Oh, you're using Sloppo F, that's old and no good, you should use Sloppo G". But in 6 months, it's "Sloppo G is no good, try Sloppo H". A model is only good if it's new, apparently!
There are elements here of:
- Lack of self awareness
- Failure to observe patterns over time
- Techno-optimism
- Straight up gambling ("the next hand will be better")
The best name I can come up with is the "Latest Model Fallacy". Which is pretty boring. Got anything punchier?
@varx@infosec.exchange This doesn't quite do what you're going for, I think, but I've found "the bias bias" to be useful so I thought I'd share. It was coined by Henry Brighton in a 2015 paper and refers to the tendency to reach for increasingly complicated models of the world in all sorts of fields. It is opposed to seeking simpler models that might work better, fit the data better, be easier to understand and reason about, etc. Brighton's work on this, and the field of ecological rationality generally, uncovers examples where simpler is better as well as criteria for deciding when you should reach for complex models and when doing so won't help or will produce worse results.
In the present context, always reaching for more training data and models with more tunable weights is an example of this bias in action, seems to me.
