New: Proton, the company behind ProtonMail, emailed staff to say it will be 're-interviewing' workers about how they use AI. The implication is, if you're not using AI, or won't learn, you may lose your job. “These re-interviews are consequential,” a leaked email seen by 404 Media reads.

@Alice Well, I'll bite. I'm a web dev and I'm in-between projects, so this might be fun. Would you be willing to test a demo version when it's ready?
I'm thinking of calling it...
Holy Crop!
Users will be able to crop at any size and ratio. Then after the period is up, all the crops will be revealed (maybe with a heat map or something to show how most users cropped it) and anyone can vote for their fav. Maybe the competition aspect is less attractive than finding unique crops.
@Krumple_Footskin That's a good idea! It would be cool if there wasn't even downloading/uploading of the image and instead you're just taking the image as it is on the screen and cropping directly from within the app, saving, and then they all auto-publish at the same time.
I sped up the Tapestry timeline by over 350% by getting rid of SwiftUI. Increasingly of the opinion that SwiftUI was a huge mistake. There are parts of it that are good and have increased iteration time immensely, but the costs.... oh the costs...
@bigzaphod Good man. Rest in pieces, SwiftUI.
@Chapz Let's take the AI out of this for a moment.
I occasionally find a solution to a problem on Stack Overflow. I copy-paste that solution and in my codebase I link to that solution as attribution.
Perhaps a project adds a policy "No code from Stack Overflow allowed."
That's fine!
If I understand the underlying mechanics of that solution I found, I would then close the tab and not copy-paste anything. I would "reset" my brain. Then I'd go in and program the solution myself.
Make sense?
@jaredwhite Not really. You will just write something along the line what you saw at Stackoverflow, maybe with a small adjustment. You would have done it with adjustments probably anyway, without copy pasting. But in the end, you looked. And once you saw, pretending to close the window, and writw what you saw out of the head doesn't really make it any different.
A difference would be if you never resorted to opening stackoverflow at all.

Here's what I think is absolutely possible:
- We won't need oil in 20 years
- We can have solar, batteries, wind energy in decentralised ways and will never need fusion reactors
- Trains are better to move us around, individual traffic solutions only for the last 10 miles
- We are continuously progressing on the quality of life and it will only get better
- We can tax the rich.
- We can move towards a cooperative and social capitalism that helps the many
It's not revolution, it's evolution :)
@jwildeboer we *did and still do* tax the rich 🤓

As a taster, here's the first chorus of Austerity Waltz, one of the tracks on my forthcoming EP. The backing will build in later choruses.
What I'm struggling with at the moment are the verses ...

Linux Foundation: "Open Source devs faster with AI"
Source: self-reported.
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/research/oss-development-gen-ai-era-2026
About self-reporting:
- devs think that they are much faster with AI. See the first attached image that plots the with-ai vs without-ai estimates of the data from metr: https://github.com/METR/Measuring-Late-2025-AI-on-OSS-Devs
- But they are not. See the second attached image, screenshotted from the article by metr: https://metr.org/blog/2026-02-24-uplift-update/#other-means-of-measuring-productivity
Self-reported AI productivity numbers are usually badly wrong.
To help keep the newsletter going, I've launched a Premium Newsletter that should go out at least once a week.
And, since the launch is happening at the end of October, I figured I might as well do it as a Halloween sale.
So, you can buy a year's membership to the Premium Newsletter for €25 EUR (50% off) with this link:
https://payhip.baldurbjarnason.com/b/BMsyT
But wait, there's more...
You can also get that year's membership in the Premium Newsletter as a part of a heavily discounted bundle that includes all of my ebooks and the Premium Newsletter

The amount of LLM-generated software flooding into the retro computing world makes me sad.
Oh god, the Star Wars Prequel Discourse is starting up again.
Look, all I can tell you is this: I was in one of the opening night midnight screenings of EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE. I paid and waited in a long line to see that movie at the first moment it was possible to see it, which means I was in a room full of the most rabid, loyal Star Wars fans you can imagine. And I have never felt the mood in a room deflate more quickly and violently than I did in that room on that night, before or since
@jalefkowit /me too. The excitement was incredible beforehand. Not so much 2hrs later.
