I was out of work 2009-2013. I applied for an average -- just calculated -- of about 15 jobs per working day for that entire period. Total was ~3,500. I worked about 6-8 full-time paid weeks in those 4 years, and I got about 5 invitations to job interviews in that time. In other words, I averaged about 1 interview per 1,000 applications, roughly one per year.
This is why I emigrated.

@jonikorpi Personally, I like hard wax oil for surfaces like that. I apply two coats, then let it harden for a couple days before considering the surface usable.
every time they announce a new ipad i go through a yearly kinda thought process of confusion about what an ipad is even for. it isnt an actual computer, it doesnt have a proper file system, or a keyboard (just the shitty flappy fabric one), an e-reader is surely better for reading. it can take photos, but why?? watching movies on a plane maybe? annotating PDFs? procreate i guess? i think “portable digital art” is the only use case that can justify spending hundreds on something so useless????

I'd have the iPad on stage and the computer close to the mixer at the other end of the room. That moment passed though, so, yeah I agree it's useless to me now.

@mntmn There's a whole genre of tools called "low-code" or "no-code" the predate LLMs. Though they are still probably an order of magnitude more complicated for non-programmers than LLM coding. Examples: Budibase, Appsmith, Tooljet, Retool. (I would bet that many of these pivoted to being AI-driven.)
@sarahstreza right. i checked some of these out a while ago and indeed there are many ai pivots. i was wondering if someone already did something post-ai in that area, so to speak.
@x_cli The only advantage of email-OTP is that the recipient is not in possession of the seed, which an attacker might have captured unnoticed.
In practice, that will probably make a difference only rarely - when an attacker has access to client credentials, the victim email account is likely compromised too.
Both are not (real-time) phishing-resistant either way.
@x_cli (I assume email-OTP is also less support hassle on the operator side, removes all the cases where a client has lost both seed and recovery codes... Feels like lazy "yes, we have MFA" checkbox-ticking nevertheless, and it's certainly less convenient to use when you have a password manager.)

Correction they did not ban AI slop, they banned everything that could possibly be related to AI. Including Linux.

@mattiem that last post of mine was mostly despair. I think we are royally screwed as a society.
I think there’s at least a couple of different things here.
On the societal effects of what’s happening now, I tend to agree with @Migueldeicaza’s pessimistic view 😭
But @mattiem you seem to also be concerned that humanity cannot adapt to not being the smartest person in the room?
I’m not sure. Most of us actually aren’t the smartest person in the room. This is something that the developer community is particularly predisposed to find unnerving… but it’s still true, and most people cope.
When working at a popular supermarket, I was in charge of the books. Putting out the latest releases and such. Whenever one of Nadine Dorries shitrags was released, I'd hoof the lot into the back of the store cupboard. Small, petty wins feel nice.
