Fedi, talk to me about thin clients and low-power computing.

I've got two raspberry pi's in my basement, a 5 running Kodi with an external hard drive and a 4 running Home Assistant, they each draw usually under 10 watts. I'm leaving my upstairs desktop computer turned on while I'm recovering from surgery, purely because it's got apache etc for my testing server (improbable island etc) and personal dokuwiki for me to access from my front porch on my laptop, and it's a hundred damn watts, and *Liz Truss voice* that. Is. A. Dis. Grace.

I've been meaning to offload the local-website-serving and some other little always-on computerytasks to something more appropriately-powered for ages, and I've got a few Pi 3's, but having three computers doing a thing seems like silly territory.

Plus this Kodi Pi doing its thing through an external USB hard drive gives me the heebiejeebies honestly, so what I want is either 1) some kind of Actual Computer with enough room inside it to put several big hard drives on SATA wires but which still draws less than maybe 20 watts idle, or 2) a low power motherboard and processor and I'll just buy a hard drive cage and screw it all to a big sheet of plywood because I work in coin-ops and that's how we roll.

Does that exist? A low power computer that can be my media player box (not media SERVER, this'll be plugged straight into the projector, I don't want a computer to hold videos and another computer to play them, that's sillytown) and is cheap and very very very low-power?

Let me know about your tiny cheap low-power computers setups pls, my budget is <$100 not counting hard drives and by all means assume I can fiddle with things

(don't reply if you don't have a tiny low-power computer setup or just want to tell me to use an old laptop or ask google or AI or whatever thx, I want actual recommendations from people who can put their actual hands on the actual machines in question)

@neil They've been employing the TV licensing people I see. If they ever send me one it's going to the advertising standards agency 8)

Mind you the TV people ought to be locked up IMHO. I'm sure there are rules about obtaining money by deception and threats

He might actually convince himself anyone likes him one of these days

Yeah I’m not reading all that.

Other indicators:

• only talks about AI related news, doesn't have any other hobbies.
• all comments are single paragraphs, no line breaks, no complicated thoughts that require building up with a thesis or supporting evidence.
• unusually polite and supportive, it's not full on glazing but the threadiverse is culturally pretty cold and unwelcoming and he does not fit.

that’s a lotta words too bad I ain’t readin em

@CLCsocial Für alle, die so wie ich nachschauen: das ist in Wien. 😉

At that point you probably should have been voting third party. They won’t win but if they somehow hit 5% of the vote the party qualifies for federal funding in the subsequent election, to my knowledge. Also, the big parties do look at what votes they are losing out on to third parties to see how they should realign in the future just as much if not more as they look to see how they can engage non voters.

I’m torn. I do want you to care, because people like you with your head in the right place not caring may have contributed to politics getting to the place it is.

But I want politics to be boring again, too. So shall we say, when this blows over, back to caring intermittently, like a little, around elevation times?

@phessler @overunderlay have fun!!

morning walk to work

@lowqualityfacts never forget

@rolle Aika siistin näköinen tuo Levus. Toimisi varmaan hyvin myös avaruus-simulaattoreihin jne. jos näppäimistön lisäksi olisi lentokäyttöön tarkoitetut ohjaimet kiinnitettynä jalustaan.

Idk, not being american and not thinking about how the natuon with tge biggest milutary power always somehow finds the worst person te elect would be really nice for once.

He's cute though, so all this can be forgiven

Hello, everyone! Are you working on a 3D game in the Godot engine and would like to simulate day and night based on the current time? This sky shader might be just what you need for your project. Let’s take a look at how it works and how to program it.

This dog believes it is his job to alert the neighborhood to any change in routine, including a squirrel climbing a tree or a leaf blowing by. And he takes this responsibility extremely seriously
