I keep wanting to learn more Rust or Swift, but one reason I keep coming back to Python for command-line tools—besides my much greater familiarity with it—is argparse.

Python's argparse module is killer. One of the first things I do in a new program is write its ArgumentParser, because that lets me quickly spec out how it will take input and what optional features it will have, and (via the help strings) some of the behavior.

I pine for it in every other language.

@boredzo I don't know the specific features of argparse, but clap is popular in Rust. You define the types and you get a CLI and help text automatically. https://docs.rs/clap/latest/clap/_derive/_tutorial/index.html

The thing that is particularly fishy about the government advice to stock up on food is this is the same government involved in a genocide in Gaza, this is the same government that allows child poverty, this is the same government cutting public services and destroying our health system.

They don't care if you die!

So why advise people to stock up on supplied except for the propaganda value?

One of the squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) of Thompson Park, who I suspect someone has been feeding as he kept coming quite near to us and looking at us expectantly.

A gray squirrel with a big fluffy tail and limbs somewhat soggy from the damp grass stands on his hind legs and looks toward the camera. He is in short grass scattered with fallen leaves.

@tobias oh wow thank you for the advice. Would you recommend it even if I have sign-ups disabled AND 2FA on for my own account?

@_elena Yes I would.. everyone with php websites is recommended to take their sites offline until they are able to upgrade. I don't haven't bothered to learn the specifics of the risks tbh but would take that precaution.

@bigzaphod I love the new performance improvements in this new build, but have noticed that the auto-play video preview option doesn’t seem to be being respected on my iPhone. Have submitted feedback via TestFlight.

@diw hmm. I can’t seem to replicate this here so far this morning but I didn’t have a chance to dig up your TF feedback report, though, so maybe there’s some specific trigger or specific kind of video… or… something you mentioned in there, but so far I’m not seeing this and I’m not sure why. The code checks out as far as I can tell, too. Odd…

*deep breath* Okay, I'm…

I'm going to finish this. I'm going to do it.

When I set this down due to the PHP fire drill, I knew *exactly* what I needed to do, and how to get Idris to do it; but I could not get the Idris syntax to cooperate— due, I *believe*, to type errors the compiler was mis-flagging as syntax errors. I've got two reasons to hope I can just sit down and get things working.

One: This post… https://types.pl/@ionchy/117479460246454593 which might be the thread if I pull it, things start working…

Two: Holes. Perhaps holes will save me.

When I used to write a lot of OCaml, I got into this habit of writing things in a particular order, like chiseling a statue in reverse. I'd write things "in to out", smallest and most basic things first, larger scope last. This is because OCaml's extreme type inference lead to "spooky action at a distance", so if I wrote the small things last, a minor error in a small thing could cause a type error in a big thing (e.g., in entirely the wrong place).

Hey, @EUCommission, fuck you too.

On Wednesday, EU Member States approved a change to the GDPR that would put the profit-making interests of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX over European's fundamental right to data protection. According to the approved text, processing personal data “in the context of AI” should automatically be lawful. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens “in the context” of AI. Schrems: “Under the agreed text, the profits of AI companies would typically trump European’s fundamental right to privacy. This is nothing but a digital expropriation of Europeans.”

They offer a genuinely good product and I think it’s important to support companies that sell a good product rather than their customers’ info.

I paid $5 for a couple of years but eventually stopped because I kept running out of searches after a few weeks. $10 a month for a search engine is excessive but 300 searches a month is too limiting.
