This is why I have mixed feelings at best about the common sentiment that corporations use our work all the time and ought to pay for it. Sure, that's like saying the sky is blue - it's such a true observation that it's unchallenging. But the tricky part is achieving that without it becoming a problem of creative control. This is something that proprietary software companies often have much more leverage about, though they misuse the power. When was the last time Microsoft cared about the opinion of a paying customer?
Non-profit orgs are a consistently safer bet, if still something you should probably vet before just taking money.

Achieved:
* early morning ice skating session
* put washing out on line
* planted out sweet corn and "good mother stallard" beans which I'd germinated indoors
* gave them and everything around them All The Water
* replaced mulch
* straightened up, retained consciousness and balance as my head swam for gold, and came back inside for a banana and giant glass of water
* engaged smart home aircon system (muslin curtains hanging in front of open windows)
I think I'm winning. The only problem is, I do have to go to Bin Inn today, and I don't think it's going to get any cooler outside if I wait.....
it's the FlutterBug Halloween special! I've been really into Halloween animatronics this year, so I made a video showing off what I found!

Look, I'm willing to say this is impressive, but it's also terrifying:

I'm over here lovingly hand-crafting (what I think is) a useful piece of system software right now, a few thousand lines of code, and a few weeks' work to build it.
Meanwhile, this AI thing reverse-engineered all of Unreal Engine 1 from the retail binaries over that same time frame.
I'm just trying not to feel an enormous amount of existential dread right now. Maybe that's dumb of me, I dunno.
@icculus for me, the most beautiful thing about software are the moments when by reading code I learn something about the author.
Whether it's a beautifully simple solution to a complex problem, a very wise handling of a hard-to-anticipate edge case, an ugly hack, or a frustrating compromise - it tells a story of a human who cared.
And IMO that's worth more than a mountain of code nobody has looked at.

This attitude is why the internet is full of ads. Doing shit for free doesn’t happen on an empty stomach. I’d rather pay a fair price for software and services I use. I’m not saying anyone’s pricing is fair, just pointing out I don’t agree with this behavior.
Podcasting 2.0 October 23rd 2026 Episode 276 - "Jackleg Leechers"
Adam and Dave discuss the PhPocalypse and ad strippers
@adam @dave Interesting show. First, ad strippers are my favorite kind of stripper.
@james and I once had a back-and-forth on the ethics of ad stripping. One high-impact insight was "don't let the ad stripping modify the file as delivered by the host" and create a TiVo experience vs. zeroads.ai (rehosting on a non-podcaster feed).
The question: is it more ethical to have your robot chop up a file and serve it up to yourself, or stream from host with option of auto-skip ads?
Not to totally harp, of course, but this is why I've drifted to a position of intense skepticism and caution when it comes to for-profit corporate funding.
Plenty of projects think they need that money, when actually they need architectural hygeine. And if you think corpo money is the thing you need to meet those hygeine goals, you're being naive about the strings attached to those finances.

Honestly not everyone will agree, but personally I can’t see any flaw in using AI to read through your code and point out security flaws. It’s going to happen regardless of whether you initiate it. It’s not like us sys admins are going “well I’m not going to patch the dirtyfrag vulnerability because it was discovered with AI”. I’d say knowing if AI can find a vulnerability in your code, is just a requirement right now.

I wanted to do it on the device a long time ago, but it added more than 100 MB just for that feature.
But yes, it might need a disclaimer, even though everything is handled on our side without any data collection.

List of RSS feeds distributed by each software on Fediverse
As far as I know, the software used by Fediverse, a decentralized social networking site, makes information public due to its decentralized nature, and as a result, it’s often possible to obtain feeds of the latest information via RSS.
However, the extent to which this is possible varies depending on the software’s capabilities and features, and I was interested in the functionality of each piece of software, so I decided to write this article to research and summarize the state of RSS on Fediverse, including its URL structure.
This article is based on a pioneering article titled “Finding Fediverse Feeds” that appeared on the website Hyperborea: Kelson Vibber.

A well-known method of distributing RSS feeds from the web to ActivityPub is software (server) called RSSParrot, which was created for that purpose.
In addition, in the Japanese-speaking world, there is a public Mastodon instance called the RSSフィードbot鯖, which is dedicated to RSS Bots and is also widely used.

“Why would we do that?”
“The risk.”
“Not following you.”
“It’s dangerous.”
“Not for us it’s not.”
“Huh?”
“We just don’t want the soldiers using it.”
“Because it might help their enemies.”
“Because it screws up the odds for the government officials…sheesh.”

Two weeks until Election Day and the closing arguments are something. Ramaswamy exploited his opponent’s childhood trauma in an ad Trump unsurprisingly praised. Big names hit the trail for Democrats. And in a gross display of groveling, Steve Witkoff called Putin a humanitarian hours before Russia bombed Kyiv. Let's unpack it all. https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/october-23-weekly-news-roundup
