Yes, it’s antiquated because we used to be factory workers, where we’d just have a start-stop time because we weren’t automatons that could work anytime. The factory had a beat because product Z takes N steps.
But a cashier is basically in a sales factory; they mediate sales between shoppers and the department store. So, your “antiquated” is just a privileged perspective.
Yes, basically all of these missives and thought experiments implicitly exclude retail while studiously avoiding admitting that this is the case. Retail stores need to be open a sufficient number of hours at the right time(s) of day to capture their potential customers. Unless you’re not able to handle your checkout line or your restocks for whatever reason, “efficiency” doesn’t really enter into it. Not in the sense of employee time, anyway. Maybe the world’s best 7-11 clerk could check out a thousand customers in an hour but just because he can that doesn’t mean it makes sense to close the store at 4:00 PM or only keep it open three days out of the week.

I like what Kagi are doing, even though I don’t pay for their search engine. I’ve been enjoying browsing the Kagi Small Web portal recently.

One of the things that I resent most about AI is that it makes uncreative people think that THEY created something, so let's normalize reminding these people that they just used a dumb robot to steal someone else's creativity.
@Alice AI is essentially crappy trace paper

One sad aspect is that at this rate, maybe in 5 years, it will be hard to even explain to new generation of people entering tech exactly what they missed. Kinda like trying to explain why the internet was a better place years ago.
Everybody in the pro-democracy movement should have Ilhan Omar’s back.

I have seen the fhlomarkets in the past, I’d love for them to take off but uptake is slow and usually it’s odd items at ridiculous prices.
I know there was a post on lemmy/piefed from a Melbourne based guy who added a site he was working on a few months ago. Not sure how it went but he was open to talking about how he set up and what he was hoping from it.
I'm a fridge magnet kleptomaniac. I pinch them from gift shops, and other people's houses. If you're wondering where your souvenir from Benidorm is, it's on my fridge now.
