No, the horses were sent to WW1 and it wasn’t pretty.

Fediverse
Thinking of opensourcing my daily-driver fediverse app. What are your thoughts on running it through an AI security tool before doing so?
For about a year as a hobby I’ve been writing an app that scratches several itches that I’ve had with the fediverse (multiple accounts at once, supporting both microblog- and threaded-style content, synthetic/hybrid feeds, etc.) and for the past month or so have been using it exclusively on the desktop and about 50% of the time on mobile (Voyager is my main mobile client and source of inspiration here). I’d like to open source the whole thing. But the code is mine, therefore buggy and bad. Normally I’d not worry too much about that, but in the age of LLM attacks I don’t want to contribute more security vulnerabilities to the world. Should I use an LLM security tool to analyze my code and point out security issues so I can patch them before releasing the code? If so that would more or less be the only AI contribution. I’m a practical-minded person and use AI tools at work so it doesn’t bother me, but I know lots of people here have strong (and often helpful) opinions on the matter.
Don’t overthink and just publish it.
@liaizon @praxeology @zenbrowser i would have given a try at duckduckgo browser out of curiosity, but no linux compatibility.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckDuckGo#DuckDuckGo_Private_Browser
"The core browser functionality is the WebView component provided by the operating system. This means the browser engine is Blink on Android and Windows, and WebKit on iOS and macOS."
@doriane @praxeology @zenbrowser the whole front end of zen is customizable with CSS snippet extwntuon things so you could make it look as blocky as you liked and put a wonky mascot spinner in the chrome much easier then any of the alternatives I have seen. It's also not a for profit company. DDG isn't really doing anything browser wise other then rebranding already existing software.
What eMudhra did, getting a reputable root CA to sign a powerful intermediate certificate for whom everybody could have the private key, is what many people have been hoping for for years.
All the important stuff is patched or restricted in what it can connect to so it's not really a problem for anybody that takes security seriously.
At the same time tools like mitmproxy can now finally help us to analyze all communications from devices where manufacturers never really respected their end users. Smart TVs, mobile phones, etc. will have their traffic analyzed. Often features disappeared over the years as services got shut down.
For any device that trust this root CA, thanks to eMudhra, it will be possible to create replacement services that people can run at home. Devices might even gain new features. What eMudhra did is a great thing!
Home router manufacturers should take note too as their feature set will change drastically the coming years.
Control: Resonant continues the weird computer choice of the FBC: HP-85's with a white-phosphor IBM-5151 monitor on top.
@foone As I’ve learned when showing my teletypes, people just can’t conceive of a computer without a conventional screen.

When I win the lottery, I’m gonna start a pacifist hippie commune and call it The War Room.
Might raid the English on weekends, though.

Pacifist hippie communes can have a little battle, as a treat
ALSO!
The city immediately north of us (Seven Points TX) handed over their law enforcement department to the county because they couldn't maintain a police force.
The city immediately south of us (Trinidad TX) had its police force dissolved by the Texas AG last month for failing to meet minimum standards.
There is, quite literally, no law enforcement around here. Ain't nobody worried about anyone sneaking into a pool :)
@johnhattan I sincerely hope Peggy Sue's family and friends are able to get justice for her. That's horrible.
On the other hand, if you see me cruising up and down TX 274 on a chopper with a subgun in my hand and babbling about TAZ and "Bob," I hope you'll understand.
@sknob c'est le moment si tu veux adopter, si c'est toi j'arriverai à la laisser 🤭
@PetitPas je suis tenté, mais rien que logistiquement, ça me paraît extrêmement compliqué 😬
@WeirdWriter @stephan Yes I had seen some talk of vibe coding. It really is going to get hard to escape this in future.
It doesn't even bother me that much that it's vibe-coded (yeah, that bothers me too, but not that much).
What really really really bothers me is when people expect me to spend my precious time reading something that they didn't spend any time writing.
For example this bit of "documentation": https://docs.omicron.blog/using/writing/
is an impenetrable pile of slop from the very bottom of the barrel. Expecting a human to read that is a kick in the face.
so many things nowadays don't have documentation, they just point you at a discord server. this is because nobody makes or does anything anymore, they just chat on the internet with eachother. in 10 years there wont actually even be software anymore, just discord groups where people can chat about what software might be like if it existed

What’s crazy is I can’t tell if that’s a real quote or not
OH MY GOD
I realized why the vibecoder software can be "like a home cooked meal" bothers me so much https://bradfrost.com/links/post/an-app-can-be-a-home-cooked-meal/
IT'S THE STEAMED HAMS SKETCH
Someone says they're making you a home cooked meal and then they plop a Krusty Burger on your plate and call it a family recipe they made themselves
That is very good!
@mdhughes That's too bad about openbsd, I liked the idea of using a Canadian operating system. Plus their songs are a lot of fun (I would unironically listen to them in high school back when my music collection was entirely made of random, non-pirated songs I could find around the internet)
@Canageek Oh and OpenBSD made a really weird kinda annoying song/image for the new update. That may just be them attempting humor.

The sugar rush from Vancouver’s municipal election didn’t last long. The dread of a double upset is here; elections in BC and Brazil are looking dire. And what hits hardest is not even the terrible consequences of these decisions, but the fact that more than half of us will vote for change even if change means devilish people in power.

If that’s what you’re doing for the general election, you are no better than a non-voter. No bullshit argument or reasons change the realities on the ground.
