I love how there are multiple comments downplaying the $2 billion number.
It just goes to show how brainwashed people really are when it comes to numbers like $2 billion.
Of course, compare that number to Elon Musk’s wealth, and $2 billion doesn’t seem like all that much. Compare it to what I have, however, and the difference is almost incomprehensible. I make $80,000 a year. Even if I saved every single dollar I earned, it would take me 25,000 years to accumulate $2 billion. Let that sink in for a moment.
$2 billion in insured property damage is an absolutely massive amount of damage caused by the BLM riots. However, that still doesn’t change the point I’m making, which is that the meme is misinformation.
Your argument is that memes don’t tell the whole story and never can. That’s a completely different argument, and it doesn’t address my point.
My point is that the meme is deliberately presenting a misleading picture of what happened. The fact that the damage amounted to $2 billion is directly relevant to that discussion.
The meme implies that the BLM riots caused relatively little property damage. They did not. The estimated insured property damage was approximately $2 billion.
Downplaying that figure to make the damage appear insignificant is textbook misinformation, particularly when it’s being used to push a very specific political narrative.
And let’s be clear about something: my personal opinions on BLM and the riots are probably very different from what most people here assume. In fact, the person I originally responded to would probably disagree with a good deal of what I have to say about both BLM and the riots themselves.
But that’s beside the point.
I am specifically and intentionally calling out the propaganda and misinformation presented in this meme. Nothing more, nothing less.
You don’t have to agree with my opinions about BLM to acknowledge that a meme misrepresenting the scale of property damage is misleading. Those are two entirely separate issues, and conflating them is exactly how political misinformation gets a free pass.
It’s a $32 trillion economy, so I wouldn’t consider it a stretch to say that BLM caused the slightest amount of property damage in a meme. The $2 billion figure doesn’t seem significant or as relevant.

I believe in NOT being purposefully deceitful when trying to convince other people, which is what people misusing the Trolley Problem for this situation are.
This is especially so because the logic of the Trolley Problem is an hypersimplification which does not include the kind of things that might actually work in the totally fucked up anti-Democratic system in America - voting in Primaries and being part of Civil Society movements.
The Trolley Falacy is nothing more than thought closing political propaganda.
Those who really believe in harm reduction have been long talking about voting in Primaries and direct political participation supporting Primary candidates who are different, not parroting simplistic bollocks

I suggest you go read more about the Mathematical domain called Games Theory if you think casting one vote amongst millions once every 4 years in a Voting System Mathematically designed so that not all votes count the same, with the only information before casting the vote being what the people who can benefit from your choice say they will do (with no mechanism to enforce their promises), is anywhere near the same as an individual direct choice with guaranteed results between two actions whose possible outcomes the one making the choice knows upfront with absolute certainty.
There should be a special Falacy for pulling out the Trolley Problem for situations where it’s Mathematically not applicable.

Thank you for falling for the propaganda and blaming people who didn’t want to support genocide rather than placing the blame at those in power who refused to take the most basic moral stance we can demand of our politicians.

@mcc @ariadne it's tough. she's super burnt out and wants to leave; she's had to pull two all nighters in the past month to keep up with work. they laid off 70% of her coworkers and expect her to do more with less bc they think AI should improve her productivity, when in practice it slows her down
but she makes a lot of money and is also responsible for paying like 30% of our 8-person polycule's living expenses, including healthcare for a lot of disabled trans people (including me)
@gwenverbsnouns @ariadne It sounds really tough. I'm sorry.

“Every other day besides election day”
Yet libs yell at anyone that dates to criticize or demand more action than just standing on roadsides on a single weekend every 8 months. It’s always “you can’t say that now!!! You’ll discourage people from supporting our party!!!” even when the next election is over a year away.
I don’t know what to tell you there. You’re saying that people who think we should change the system from within get mad when you try to change the system from outside of it?
It feels like you’re just describing being a leftist in a world of neo-fascists and neo-liberals.
I didn’t say voting wins the libs over… I said being a revolutionary leftist doesn’t free you from voting. If you want to improve material conditions you have to fight with every tool you have. Voting is quick and easy and improves material conditions for minorities Neo-fascists want to oppress.
Libs are not going to be on our side in this. They’re part of the oppressive system we want to dismantle. A part that’s just as hard to overcome as the fascists.
Besides, making progress on a revolutionary front also forces libs to make concessions which only improve the outcomes of voting.
Fuck fascists and fuck the libs. We don’t vote lib because they’re good, we do it because it’s an easy way to limit oppression against marginalised communities while we work on anticapitalist pursuits like community building, mutual aid, and other more assertive strategies as the opportunity arises.
We need to stand together
@fionafokus Lots of QLC NAND do need to re-write their contents back on after some time, but likely not that often. If you still long term metrics it would be interesting to see what the difference is between the kernel claimed writes and the drives counters.
I spent a load of time staring at this problem at a previous job found that fsync and small append-ish writes can amplify out massively due to internals on how the drive controllers are implemented. But also it sounds like you have a small-ish consumer drive, so maybe the rules are just very different on these units, My dad had a nasty case of this before: https://benjojo.co.uk/u/benjojo/h/m9kdQ15cfZPw23CcZN
@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk @fionafokus@mystical.garden I have sometimes seen some massive write amplification when the drive is "full". Is trim actually getting all the way to the disk? Disk encryption and some LVM type setups can eat it.

Heaven forbid your kids should be as informed about the world around them all possible before they have to go adult in it. Or are we just afraid conversation with them over this topic will wind up showing how irrational a position you hold, and how much of an insensitive monster you are?

Sorry mate but “sending to a nation comitting a genocide for use in an urban environment bombs so big and with so much collateral damage that your our own military refuse to use them because of that” is totally “being onboard with genocide” and “we’ll do everything in our power to help them”.
Even the fucking Brits who have been arresting their own people as “Terrorists” for demonstrating against that Genocide weren’t giving Israel the second largest conventional bombs in existence to drop in a very densely populated urban environment.
Unwavering unlimited support for Israel no matter what they do is the one policy that didn’t at all change when Trump replaced Biden.
Literally the subset of American top politicians who are against this shit are the Democrat Progessives (a small minority even inside their own party) and some of those still voted to send arms to Israel as long as it was claimed they were “for self-defense” so the jury is still out on those specifically.
Europe is very much politically divided on the question Israel and its Genocide, but not so America were the anti-Genocide politicias are a small enough group to be called a “fringe”.
