Americans over 60 now spend more than half their leisure hours in front of screens. But unlike millennials and most Gen-Xers, who have spent years navigating engagement bait, stealth marketing, and AI slop — and have developed a working instinct for what to trust — older adults tend to have little idea of what they’re looking at."

Not to sound overdramatic but with each passing hour I’m getting more and more saddened by the rejection of the DEIB devroom that we proposed at #FOSDEM (an initiative driven by @RosannaSibora and @Gina)

It would have been so powerful to have a DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) track - to promote the visibility of a different kind of folks in tech AND celebrate them at Europe’s largest open source gathering.

The rejection probably hurts a lot because in this new life, I feel like I have finally found my people and I am now looking forward to each edition of FOSDEM, like a homecoming 🥹

Maybe the silver lining in this is that I can turn the disappointment into a new creative project? Maybe a photo + short interview series celebrating underrepresented people in tech, who are brilliant trailblazers?

Various people including me suggested that a DEIB-themed OFFDEM might be perfect.

Imagine giving this such PR that it becomes a) very well visited, detracting from FOSDEM, with opportunity to have a whole bunch of nice tracks there, including inclusive fedi, and b) rub it in at FOSDEM conf in all kinds of creative ways to attract attention to the fact that DEI deserves way more care in FOSS circles.

Just one way is stickers. FOSDEM is sponsored by Big Tech, Google et al, and in past years mysteriously the FOSDEM became full of stickers like below on the lantern pole..

Internet Archive ops staff were heroes last night.

PHP vulnerability announced, soon saw attacks, isolated the vulnerability, used Claude to make fixes for our older php versions, used local models to run simulated attacks, deployed.

reinforced WAF and other guards.

Offline briefly, Back on new versions and running!

Given the severity, there are heroes in many many orgs from last night.

Could have been no lights, no traffic signals, real problems.

Nowadays, the internet sometimes feels like a once well-to-do neighbourhood that became a slum after an industrial park & motorway were built through it. And I'm the lifelong resident who refuses to leave, unable to accept that the decaying, now unsafe area will never regain its former grandeur.

PHP is a million or so lines of C code that pervasively used alloc functions that longjmp() on failure, so OOM bailout creates corrupted state. the fix uses fallible allocs and a global please-return-early OOM flag but requires touching Everything. completeness is impossible 😰😰😰
