WordPress is too big and needs to be broken up, for the good of the internet.
@Steve_Bate
in case of #simple, count me in.
And remember, the #Fediverse is neither limited to #Mastodon, nor #ActivityPub.
sometimes an offgrid "post from the woods" is something valueable ;)
so a bridge would be enough.
For some reason, a few of my clients’ e-commerce sites break after updating PHP. I can’t share any more details at the moment, as they’re still working on it.
On a completely unrelated note, two customers of my clients insisted on having a call, both involving the cybersecurity department of the massive corporate group they belong to. Wasted time… but ok.
One thanked us for responding so quickly. The other asked why their server hadn’t already been secured.
I explained that I had already applied the mitigations and installed the patch just ten minutes after it became available.
Their response: “You need to review your processes, because servers must be patched before the vulnerability is publicly disclosed.”
I ended the call laughing while eating a plate of tortellini.
@stefano next time tell them that they're right and that they absolutely should've budgeted 500 billion Euro in Claude tokens to pre-emptively find and fix/mitigate all the exploits in all the software they use. /s
These are dispiriting times for many touring performers - Birmingham , Cardiff and London all proving hard sells - a deep sense of personal failure
lol the wave of bots pentesting for php RCE exploits has begun

Some of the comments in the thread here are, unlike on other platforms, well worth reading.
I'm reminded yet again of the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect.
More accurately it is:
Knoll’s Law of Media Accuracy:
"Everything you read in the newspapers is absolutely true except for the rare story of which you happen to have firsthand knowledge." -- Erwin Knoll, as quoted in…The New York Times

China moves to Linux, WSL beats native installs, Potato gaming PCs are fixed - Linux Weekly News
Yesterday, as I sat here, using a laptop running on Free software written and maintained by volunteers, to connect, by means of a secure tunnel formed by Free software written and maintained by volunteers, to multiple servers, all running Free software written and maintained by volunteers, to apply patches prepared urgently by volunteers to resolve security vulnerabilities, I felt *incredibly* grateful for every single one of those volunteers, who makes the fact that I could do *any* of this possible.
Thank you, genuinely.

Forth is the most secure language you can possible use. It's literally called 4th. What more could you want. Every line of code cryptographically secured by the number 4. Truly fearless 💪🚀🔥
That PHPocalypse might lead me to reconsider my hatred towards Java…
… nah, no way, Java shoot my knees way to hard years ago.
If I could get Signal working on my Android tablet then that's what I'd use instead. As it is, most calls use Jitsi.
We're chronically short of bandwidth. If I were to self-host a Jitsi instance, would all video and audio streams come into my instance and radiate out to all participants, or is the protocol more peer-to-peer than that, so that adding more participants increases the bandwidth use for every participant? I'm assuming the former, because it scales better, but that makes self-hosting at home impossible.
“He enables me to be as crude and tasteless in public as I want! Was hilarious when that little girl’s parents had to figure out how to tell her what my shirt meant after she read it.”
'Roughly 70%' of internet is powered by PHP and BBC asked cyber security expert who is living under rock. Lmao 🤣 BBC please get someone from mastodon and they will explain it. Hahah ;)
@nixCraft Duh.
such expert - wow
Database import for Gram left with only 9.5GB on disk, puurfect! 👌
Currently moving the database to a volume for easier scaling, after that starting and testing Gram and import Pixey database

not that there hasn't been plenty of brain rot over there, but not afaict in core or the libraries everyone uses.
“The cleanest form of AI use is no use,” Kaveh Madani, a water scientist and director of the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health in Canada. “So when you could avoid using AI, don’t use it.”
Don’t use it for simple things. Don’t use it for calculations, directions, store hours, recipes or shopping lists, which are all searches people used to do without AI, but now do it with AI and waste power and water, Luccioni said.
@theruran @goosey Have you tried installing that?
# Ada is self hosted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-hosting)
# You need to install an existing Ada compiler and then choose
# an appropiate variant. For more info use:
# port variants gnat-gcc
% sudo port variants gnat-gcc
gnat-gcc has the variants:
ada: Uses the MacPorts Ada (https://www.macports.org/) compiler to bootstrap!
(4 more)
…
If you go on with this, turns out none of them install. IIRC some are commercial.
@theruran @goosey I must say, tho, the jab of having a wiki link for self-hosted, in case you were to try to install Ada but didn't have a CS degree with compiler course, is just <chef's kiss> perfect level of condescension. You malodorous buffoon street person, get out of here with your "port install", this is a serious language!
