I think it's pretty cool that there is something and not nothing

Sounds like every instance is doing the preview generation. Maybe it could grab the preview data it needs on the original instance, and pass that around with the post…

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
Update your PHPs, everyone:
“PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35 fix two critical vulnerabilities that can allow unauthenticated remote code execution. All PHP users are strongly encouraged to update immediately.”
the php security vuln and random number 4 make me excited to see how much worse stuff like this will be when every codebase is filled to the brim with slop code

A university course is currently trying out Pixelfed
A few weeks ago, we started noticing a number of applications on pixelfed.ca, where the user would say that they needed to register for a course. I don’t have full confirmation, but I’m fairly certain that this is a legitimate wave of signups from students at a Canadian university.
I’m sharing this post for a few reasons:
- I thought it was neat
Personally, I’m excited that people are trying out Pixelfed and using it in coursework like this. If you are one of the students, now seeing this post, welcome! :) I hope that the project goes well, and that you have a pleasant experience on the platform. Feel free to share any and all feedback.
- Some of the posts may look like spam at first
You might be seeing similar looking posts from different accounts on your feed. My guess is that the course has specific requirements and example templates. However, there’s also plenty of real content (ex. artwork, photography, etc.), so I don’t think it’s going to be disruptive
- Please report anything that seems off
As always, you can report inappropriate content through the UI. For urgent issues, please email us at support@pixelfed.ca. You can also DM admin@lemmy.ca as there is overlap with our Pixelfed and Lemmy team members.

@apocheir I should have given that its due, to be sure
I used Linux on a phone for 30 days, here's why I'm sticking with it, and why you likely won't!
@M0YNG @M0KHR @jamesb I use https://deb.sury.org/ to get PHP on my Debian boxes; it updates pretty quickly with newer versions instead of using the Debian repos...
Not sure which is funnier, that my nan actually bought a jigsaw puzzle showing two nude women flashing their tits. Or the fact that she got it for herself, not for someone else, and is currently putting it together. Tits first.
@fesshole It's the young people that are the prudish ones these days.
No iPhone Duo review today, but maybe the best review roundup (with the most links) you'll find?
@a1ba деньги абсолютно неадекватные, но у меня нет оснований полагать, что ситуация улучшится, а это самое дешевое, что можно взять, что адекватно способно работать.
Merci !
@booteille @affordance @Framasoft
Avoue que tu as aussi un peu peur d’approcher cet adminsys en de telles circonstances 😜
Which do you find more intimidating to implement, Cryptography or Data Compression? This is about perception, and please assume this is "from scratch" rather than plugging in a library.
Can I see that option where I move into to the woods far from any tech again?

My 9th grade students have at last begun to understand what it means to write a proof.
"Do you mean I could just write it out in words? Just explain why it's true?"
Yes! That is exactly what I mean. Or you could draw a diagram. Or you could sing.

@futurebird That’s wonderful

There is a spot behind the 30 story apartment towers just outside my window where the acoustics are incredible. Someone is singing gospel on this cold early morning causing the pigeons to take flight wheel as one above the NYC skyline.
They fly over the pale yellow and pink clouds intermittently visible through the windows (which have been frosted over with condensation from the heater) And that fiery beast in the basement is also singing and banging.
It's going to be a beautiful day.
