anyway I just learned that the Dutch government service websites are implemented in PHP because a national news alert has gone out that they're shut down for the day due to reasons

@JimMadge I think Community Devroom is on a upper floor again though so the track is out of reach for some of us attending FOSDEM unless ULB can provide working elevator access. @Gina @RosannaSibora @_elena

The donation model works for a very few groups, but for the vast majority of OSS and freehosted projects, donations are nowhere close to covering costs.

Even lemmy.world is viable because they only count server costs, and are volunteer run. If they had to cover staffing costs, it would be untenable.

TBH I have no issue with that. If it federates and they can make some money off building a positive community for people who are scared off by today’s fediverse, why not? There’s definitely still room for user friendly alternatives to the reigning algorithms. Hopefully they don’t go about it evil.

@stux Look, the server is not going to be available, whether you want it or not. It’s a matter of who’s in control of it.

PHP is actually short for Party Hard Project btw

And an onboarding problem.

The fediverse is nice people and great tech, with a marketing problem.
