Ubuntu 26.10: small upgrade, but some interesting things!
@pre I've long since suspected that Labour and Tories aren't actually opposing parties any more. They're both the products of Oxbridge graduates and exist to merely give us the illusion of choice. Their underlying members, self-centred elitist rich folk who care about money, are similar for both. I'm sure a lot of someones in the party will benefit from more drilling.
@david Yeah. There's been a lot of lies recently about entryism in the Green party pushing it towards supporting Palestine.
But the biggest example of it in history to my knowledge is when Tony Blair and his neoliberal entriyists took over the Labour party and turned it into a neoliberal capitalist party which opposes the other neoliberal capitalist party only on the fringes over things which don't matter to oligarchs.

@q Trout population never recovered from the wave of infosec researchers giving up hope and becoming fishermen instead. When asked about it a former infosec professional cited a web-comic popular with computer scientists as reference. The relation of this comic to the trout population decline is still being investigated as of now.

Another excellent blogpost from @girlonthenet, with some (sensible, realistic) dating tips for men, drawn from her own practical experience.
(It is an absolute travesty that G is still single, by the way. I really can't speak highly enough of her. Come on, men - step up!)
@neil @girlonthenet the old classic of men having no clue what women actually want and managing to be a total turn off in the process. I must admit it took far longer than I care to admit to realise that the reason I’ve had to turn down people while dating others, and often struggled to find someone when single, is that it’s obvious to others when you’re being a totally cringeworthy try hard and just being yourself is often the most attractive thing.
Dis donc, c'est un peu la panique cette faille PHP...
C'est pas dû à la communication ? Première fois que je vois autant d'affolement...
Otherwise we would have be who haven’t done any FreeBSD development for decades dictating direction by force of personality.
Thankfully we are immune from that and there’s no one in a key position……

To be honest, if a website has no caching of their server-rendered parts, they are also doing something wrong! Very little sites really need to re-render a public page on every view.
Around 2010, I used to work at an MSP, and once had a customer that ran a custom LAMP stack website for local radio UK stations web presence. It was a bit slow, running on a dedicated physical server, but every time it snowed, the website would 500 out - because of too many requests to the “School Closures” page. The site had no caching other than Apache’s internal cache, but PHP pages could not be cached because “reasons”, and the original developer was “not available”. I optimised their MySQL indexes, increased the number of Apache workers, and it improved the render time per page and number of concurrent connections. Stress testing looked good.
Anyway, some months later, 2AM one snowy morning, I was on call, and it went down again. This was when I discovered the school closures problem. After diagnosing, and then liaising with the customer to discuss the options, I was told “just make it work”. I ended up modifying the PHP script to add some “on spec” caching that saved the HTML to a temp file in ramdisk, and only re-ran the query-and-render code if the cached copy was more than 5 minutes old. It was hacky, but it did the trick, and I was finished by about 4 AM. This hack was later applied at their request to a number of trouble-points in the source tree, as and when things broke.
We recommended adding a Varnish cache, and found a more generalised caching library but they wouldn’t/couldn’t authorise engineering work for this - they were running on a shoestring - and they already had the tech break-fix contract with us, and decided it was sufficient to just spot fix things as they broke rather than fix the root cause.
I left that MSP in 2012, so I don’t know what happened after that, but as far as I know, the site could still be running… unlikely, but possible.
Every time there's a new study on the negative impact of LLM tools on education, work, communications, and media, at least half the commentariat will always go "but you shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater, 'AI' has constructive uses!" even as they pretend to be 'critics'.
How bad do the effects have to get before they finally go "okay, yeah, maybe it is more bad than good"?

init systems devroom got denied
but accepted was:
both "Legal & Policy Devroom" and "Open Source & EU Policy Devroom"
a devroom for "AT-Protocol" alone, while "Social Web" also got a devroom; isn't AT-Proto meant to be part of social web?
both "Decentralised Messaging" and "Decentralized Internet and Privacy"

kinda eh to have those pairs rooms with what seems like very close together topics... but okay ig
Its sad that we'll never know what happened this morning in the parallel world and alternate reality where the Green Party defeated Labour in Holborn.
Would Labour still have announced they're going to open oil-fields in a world already warmed by 1.5 degrees?
As I say, sadly we'll never know.
We do know that opening the oil fields will contribute towards that warming, that it won't reduce energy costs for UK citizens, that it won't increase energy independence, and that it will create fewer jobs than a similar investment in renewable energy industry and that those jobs will be more dirty, dangerous, and bad for the employee's heath.
So why do it?
One can only assume The Labour Party donors must benefit in some way.
