"Humans make progress when we collaborate," says @andypiper , opening the #MatrixConf, which has now taken over the Matrix home page: https://matrix.org/.

My brain is a mess today:
Reducing meds
Getting fired
Dad having blood cancer
Son off school with mental health
{there's no fun emoji for this so I'll screenshot a sticker from another app}
THE MESS.

@spytfyre@mastodon.scot 🫂 Given my state right now the best I can offer is hugs from me and Peanut the dog and sympathy and empathy. Stay strong and I hope things get better for you.
@hamishcampbell Agreed!

I have put my websites including fedi.tips, fedi.directory, fedi.garden and growyourown.services into maintenance mode while waiting for some important technical updates behind the scenes.
The updates are due today, so hopefully the websites should be back soon.
@FediTips Hope the updates go smoothly and everything is back soon!

It is, but that’s what defederation is for: If there are instances that are being sketchy, they are supposed to get cut off from the rest of the Fediverse.

Seems abusable though
If one instance doesn’t trust another, they shouldn’t federate in the first place.

Yeah, thats how it should be: one download, everyone else downloads from that server, not the original source.

Is there a reason why the publishing instance is not downloading the preview image, and then submits it with the post to the other instances? This way they would not have to fetch it themselves.

Btw. the Social coding commons, a movement without membership, also has a tagline: We social code the social code.
Here social coding has the full breadth of SX, i.e. how to live ones life. And the social code, well, I could extend the tagline with:
"We social code the social code [of society]"
The movement is timeless. It is not even substantial, just an idea, a concept. It has no objectives, no definition of success or failure. It only values progress, however small.
And everyone is free to join. You only have to "feel" like a social coder, and you're in :)

it seems like ideally it shouldn’t attempt to preview the link before a user tries to view the content. i guess that would increase latency for users though
@EdibleFuchsia It's like 6-7 but with a single number
@EdibleFuchsia But seriously, a certificate authority called eMudhra had eight of its secret signing keys turn out to be tiny numbers. One was literally 4.
These keys should be numbers around 116 digits long, so nobody could ever guess them. Instead all eight were below 256, which means anyone could try every option in under a second and forge a trusted padlock for any website.
Browsers have now blocked them. But keep your devices updated, as older gadgets that rarely get patches are where the risk remains.
