Fediverse
TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
I now have a #NetBSD 11 VPS on TierHive that only costs $5 a year. Thanks @bt for the tip.
I'm looking forward to learning.
Non, la France n'est pas au bord de la faillite. Non, les dépenses sociales ne dérapent pas.
On en parle ce mercredi 21, à 19h30, à la librairie Libertalia des Métallos, avec l'économiste Anne-Laure Delatte.

You know how sometimes sleep is like slipping into a warm ocean but then sometimes taking a nap is like a door slamming or plunging into deep water at speed and it's like just falling directly into utter howling blackness
@mcc yeah, that tracks. I've never been surprised by going to sleep; I've been actively surprised sometimes to discover that I took a nap

@aurynn incompetent handling of generating / signing intermediate CA keys lead to very weak keys being signed (many 0 bits followed by a few 1s).
Mozilla / Google have blocked all the known affected intermediates (a couple of days ago) and today detrusted the specific root CA that signed them too, as a precaution.
From skim reading it looks like *most* of the intermediate CA affected didn’t get used for production signing yet.
@ewenmcneill Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
Sometimes my wife gets up in the night for the bathroom or look after the kids. Occasionally I'll indulge in self pleasure, into a sock, to help get back to sleep. Unfortunately I'm now traumatised after accidently using the socks she brought me with pictures of the kids on
@fesshole my wife bought me socks with photos of our cats
Still thinking about how Firefox refuses to use the system CA
"I keep coming back to this graph because it’s so eye-popping, almost impossible to believe. As you see in the legend, the blue line is data centers. The grey line is everything else. Everything else. Commercial properties. Rental properties. Single family homes. Multiple family homes. Pick your preferred flavor of development, NIMBY, YIMBY, urban, rural, it’s in there. You basically have rapid data center growth and everything else contracting."
@jalefkowit it looks like this chart is US-specific
it'd be very interesting to see this for other countries - I *think* Australia won't be anywhere near as bad as this, but a few of the medium sized data centre companies have been operating from here (Sharon, Firmus) so I do wonder...
@cwebber @baconandcoconut this is true though it's not as dire as people make it out to be imo. Cucurbitacin tastes bitter, so you can pretty safely taste test the squash first. You have to actually ingest the toxin for it to cause problems https://www.poison.org/articles/toxic-squash-syndrome-if-it-s-bitter-it-s-not-dinner
@ehashman @baconandcoconut it's still a good thing I was informed because I will happily eat a terrible bitter thing for the novelty of it
