If it’s a signed checksum then maybe. But if the of instance is doing the abusing then it won’t help.

Add metadata with a checksum of the og one with signature and let each client check that up.

If one instance doesn’t trust another, they shouldn’t federate in the first place.

Is there a reason why the publishing instance is not downloading the preview image, and then submits it with the post to the other instances? This way they would not have to fetch it themselves.

Yeah, thats how it should be: one download, everyone else downloads from that server, not the original source.

Today in "#Linux things that should be easy, but surprisingly aren't":
Resizing images via GUI on Gnome in Debian 13.

(Yes, I know you can do this on the command line. Try to be normal for once, ok?)
Microsoft has been warehousing Nvidia rigs it doesn't have data centre power for since last year. Amazon admits it's doing the same:
https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-220-billion-ai-bet-data-centers-spending-challenges-2026-10
this is for preferential deals with Nvidia so they don't get cut off
come the bubble, how can we repurpose these things
upcycle them em into solar modules
Due to alleged security concerns, Israeli President Isaac Herzog's motorcade was stripped of Israeli flags during an official visit to Hungary.
So I'm trying out this @veilamp thing, finally, and I think I got a server up & running on my NAS. We sharing codes around here? I guess that's a thing for DMs, huh?
@Blodwenn theres a doom mod that some cuckcoded that does the same thing as an existing mod but worse. they didnt even look to see if it existed already before making one that is worse in every way.

Similar, except those are caused by users visiting a link, whereas the Fediverse issue is federated servers gathering info before users even see a link.

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
CA compromise?! quick! just use plain http: http://kamiokan.de/
i never really considered the fact that every vibecoded project will just be an individual thing regardless of wether or not there are others of the exact thing existing already
so it is just creating mass amounts of waste
