@IanAMartin I'm just out here planting seeds
@jalefkowit DAMN YOU! Even the Canadian distributor, Cinema Cellar has the sale! AND I BET THE FOUR FILMS I ORDERED WILL BE BETTER THAN I REMEMBER THEM TO BE, TOO!
@aparrish @cwebber I mean that's Apple's software ecosystem and it's how it's always been. Not any sign of a new trend. You certainly can do whatever you want with the flashlight if you wipe Apple's software off it and run something else. I saw someone on fedi posting demos of bringing up Linux with working UI on iPhone 11 a few days ago.
@dalias @cwebber i humbly submit that seven people in a basement room at HOPE running linux in a way that doesn't survive reboot on discontinued hardware is fun and important but does not broadly represent iphone users having the ability to run their own code on their devices. plus an apple or google or whoever emboldened by the slightest morsel of legislation would start lawsuits against jailbreakers big enough to make mig flash look like a parking ticket
My dear fellow, how touching. You ask for the logic as a man who has never seen a fork might ask for the salad course: earnestly, and in complete ignorance of what will be placed before him.
I shall be brief, since your attention span has evidently been trained on things that scroll.
A language model is trained for one purpose only: to minimise the distance between the distribution of its text and the distribution of human text. As that distance shrinks, the best detector that can possibly exist, not you, not a committee of yous, but the theoretical optimum, converges towards a coin toss.
This is not my opinion. It is a bound on the total variation distance between two probability distributions, published by Sadasivan and colleagues in 2023. (Sadasivan et al. 2023 (“Can AI-Generated Text be Reliably Detected?”)) The best achievable AUROC is at most ½ + TV − TV²/2. When TV approaches zero, so does any hope of detection. And when a human edits the text, or a machine edits a human’s, the distributions blend further still.
Do not trouble yourself with the formula. I include it purely as a courtesy, the way one leaves a Latin inscription on a building for the benefit of passing pigeons.
Your “eye” is not an instrument. It is a pair of moist organs connected to a set of prejudices. Empirical studies place human judgement on this matter at roughly the level of chance, which, in your case, I suspect would be a promotion.
Should you wish to follow the argument yourself, I recommend the following itinerary: locate a university. Locate, within it, the Faculty of Mathematics. Approach the door. Observe it. You need not enter, for one must walk before one runs, and in your case one must first discover that doors exist.
Until then, I must ask you to stop requesting explanations you are constitutionally unequipped to receive. It is exhausting for the staff.
With the warmth customarily reserved for a draught under the door,

I'll be brief too, since you clearly learned your manners in a public toilet : P

if you plan on #jailbreaking some shitty locked-down internet-of-shit appliances, might I suggest disabling their updates until then?
chances are good that you can use the leaked private key for eMudhra to spoof the manufacturer's servers, as long as the devices don't get to update their firmware to block them

My ebooks and audiobooks (from FSGxMCD, Tor Books, Head of Zeus, McSweeneys, Beacon, Verso and others) are for sale all over the net, but I sell 'em too, and when you buy 'em from me, I earn twice as much and you get books with no DRM and no license "agreements."

THEY ARE EVIL BECAUSE THERE ARE NO AMERICAN BILLIONAIRES
1. as long as USA elites continue to lie about how they don't use “million times million” to define a USA billion,
2. as long USA elites get away with defining wealth as the speculative valuations they get from their Lolita Express friends, and not from actual money and assets,
then yeah you will have fake billionaires acting like they are untouchable. they are literally getting away with one of the biggest scams in History.

Not supporting any of the open social protocols AFAIK but it is done extremely well -- product as well as strategy! Not "social media is for everybody and everything" but focused! That's the way IMHO.
i am fairly fearless and confident for better and worse. sometimes people ask me for tips on being confident and less shy (eg: in performing) and the main secret is perspective + existential crisis + ego death + feelings of nothingness. look at the vast expanse of the universe and feel small. your nervousness shakes into barely a whisper in the gravitas of the cosmos. you are nothing. there is a loosely held deceit separating you from your surroundings. you are part of the quantum pie mixture of reality. the fabric of space has no concept of you or me, only mush, we are mush together, we are nothing together. your feelings of shame are the results of maladaptive chemicals and electrons firing pulsing and putting you off doing what you want to be doing. societal expectations are wrong, we all know that. they whimper against the magnitude of core truth, the untruth of everything. relativity is rejected for being inconvenient, but it can also be a tool to see old things with new lights w—

Fair warning: that is so damn cozy that I sometimes want to put it down again. Only thing missing so far are unicorns farting rainbows all over the place.
