Yes, talk to Murderbot about its feelings. The idea was so painful I dropped to 97 percent efficiency.
Tomorrow the first #NoAI meetup in the Rhein-Neckar area is taking place. 6pm, close to Heidelberg main station. Drop @rhelune or me a message to get the exact location.

Lemmy does this to itself, too - when you create a post it federates out and then every Lemmy instance that receives it makes a GET request to retrieve the post from the original server. Even though it just received the exact same data. Some other fedi software is even worse - Akkoma does a GET of the id of every activity it receives, not just for posts but for Likes too.
It’s insane.
Anyway, proper caching at the reverse proxy / Cloudflare level solves it. The same kind of caching setup would do the same for sites serving HTML, like NPR too.

I’m a fan of the second one. My thought is, of you trust a server enough to accept messages from it, then you should also trust it enough to let it scrape the page title, article image, etc. for you, too.

@jepyang throwback to 2020 when in response to protests that literally were never violent and involved petty property damage at most, my city of 120,000 bought a tank
(while their sewer system still had/still has lead in it)

The man who attempted to ambush the Democratic Senate candidate
Abdul El-Sayed with a question about his supposed allegiance to the Muslim Brotherhood
– which El-Sayed parlayed into a viral clip for his campaign
– is the son of a political operator who recently received $250,000 for
“canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed, the Guardian has learned.
In the now-famous exchange, a man
– first identified by the Handbasket as Thomas “Tommy” Teepell
– asked El-Sayed if he would “disavow” the Muslim Brotherhood.
El-Sayed said he would, but then asked:
“What are you implying?
Do you assume that I wouldn’t?”
What followed was a five-minute exchange that has drawn over 50m views across several social media platforms,
in which El-Sayed queries the man about the guarantees of religious freedom in the constitution.
Teepell is the son of Timothy “Timmy” Teepell,
a longtime strategist for the Missouri Republican senator Josh Hawley
as well as former Republican Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal.
Timmy Teepell’s firm, Breakthrough LLC,
was paid $250,000 on 29 September by America Next,
a 501(c)(4) non-profit with which it shares a Baton Rouge office suite,
according to a filing with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
The filing says the money would fund the canvassing and influencer marketing
in opposition to
El-Sayed.
America Next has been trying to gin up “organic” town hall opposition to El-Sayed,
as the Handbasket report noted.
On 1 October, a member of the University of Michigan College Republicans,
saying he was acting for America Next,
reportedly offered students $200 to boo and question El-Sayed at a town hall in Flint.

@alisynthesis Lots of great suggestions on here, Ill add the Novation Bass Station II. It has nicely outlined sections for the components and is a bunch of fun to use. Monophonic and analog, so it doesnt get too deep. Also relatively inexpensive.
@starlily ah, a classic! I've almost bought one so many times for myself. :)

That second solution is what I thought of as doing as I read this. It doesn’t rely on a third party service being up. And that instance has to do that work anyway. So why not just share the results with others?

It’s obviously bad enough that major news orgs are blocking it.
Is that really why they’re blocking it I wonder…

About Mastodon's new user interface design:
- So much visual hierarchy lost (no bold content, all linear icons, just the "New post" highlighted)
- That "Translate" button *on every toot*
- That "Translate" button that looks like a link (forget UI 101)
- That "just copy more about Twitter layout" vibe
