hmmm got an email asking if I'd be willing to talk to a Japanese company about doing some work for them. They said they saw my solar monitoring project and liked it. I suspect phishing going on so very leery! Anyone else see these?

because ebay has decided to continue to ruin their already shit service with more and more ai, thereβs an updated privacy policy folks should probably read.
and, this likely isnβt even new (i havenβt compared the old/new policies yet etc., sorry iβm being vague) but it did lead me to the opt out of training pageβ¦
@brhfl thanks, I saw there was an update but didnβt have the spoons to read it

Fediverse
TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the siteβs servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didnβt know why, exactly.
This isnβt the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

I've come to the sad conclusion that the amount of hate speech and moderation failures on Mastodon and the Fediverse at large is not an accident but a choice.
This is based having been on the Fediverse since 2018, having run two instances, a single-user and a multi-user instance, having gone to a Fediverse conference, given talks with technical proposals on mitigation techniques, and having worked with the primary author of the ActivityPub protocol specification.
These issues have been known about for more than a decade and yet the major platforms don't take them seriously. At some point, when a bug exists for a very long time and has multiple suggestions for addressing, failure to do so is a deliberate choice.
@serge Does this mean we all have to go back to centralized systems?
