It’s Sunday. 19:07.
I’m waiting for something: what am I waiting for?
FediDevs
These are the people building the Fediverse!
@jana you can still use them in Italy. 2g is considered a backup line, so it will be maintained

How strongly can they possibly feel about this topic if they're having an LLM generate the complaint for them?
They've got staff doing a lot of thing, but they can't do everything in-house, at least not unless they get sufficient on-going financial support from people like us.
And, there are a LOT of people they need to reach who are not here (or Bsky) to be reached, especially a lot of younger voters.

Seems like at least the account back, but no word from Meta on why this happened. This is why they were so smart of @indivisibleteam build out on platforms like Bluesky and Mastodon & their own direct to their users newsletters too - that are not at the whim of giant big tech.
#Meta needs to give exact and full answer of what the Hell just happened on this critical day of action. #Nokings #NoKingsVoteEarly
@indivisibleteam Update: still no credible answer from Meta: https://www.threads.com/share/BAW-HZIBWj/
Since we had relatives in town we drove up the locals way to the BRP today around noon, when everything was still overcast and cold at the house. 50F at 2,160ft of elevation turned into 37F with 20mph winds at 5,000 feet.
We had dressed for it, with down jackets and gloves, but there were a LOT of frozen Floridians in t-shirts, and even a few in shorts.
My fav photo out the back of the Pisgah Inn. Quite a lot of #fall color.
@researchfairy I think @cwebber proposed something like this as part of @spritely ? I could be remembering wrong though! 😅
@FediThing @researchfairy @spritely Yes, it is our continuous test project
@cwebber Agreed, attribution is the most important aspect of sharing things.
@jn @researchfairy
*The way it worked/still-works* was that there was a hallucinogen object in lambdaMOO, and when you took it you went on a spiritual journey to another MOO world. I forget the object number in lambda but people still know about it.
I muddle about in this space ^ rediscovering things.
One of my aspirations is to eventually convince @cwebber to start a standards process about federating virtual realities - I suppose her institute's spritely goblins is the famous one de jour.
@screwlisp @jn @researchfairy You're on to me!!!!
Building an ocap-secure federated MUD has been a background goal (really a test-driver to make sure the rest of the tech is good enough) since Mudsync. See the talk on https://www.gnu.org/software/8sync/ which wasn't distributed or safe, but was live.

Love or hate AI for coding, this is an interesting piece:

I am scared to ask
@gabboman I have had problems with community moderators in the past, but IMO their point is invalidated by "I was warned for" not a direct ban they were warned allowing for some conversation on why the rules are like that.
I can understand a No JKR rule since JKR does go against Trans Rights and I am sure there are better authors to support.
@VANTABlack2000@mastodon.gamedev.place
no no you see i am a fascist
You can now login to FediDB using a special code in your bio, for servers that don't support oauth or the MastoAPI!
great and it works, thanks!
I just wish the list of oauth supporting software was not hardcoded
RE: https://social.coop/@cwebber/117440946737028822
attribution is a bedrock social concept for me. it's a major way we navigate the world, discover new things, develop taste, interact with one another in a positive way. even in a fully post-capitalist world it would still be important.
what's that band you're listening to? who drew that art on your t-shirt? that sandwich looks good, where's it from? that's clever, who said that? i trust [person's] opinions on [subject]. etc.
anything that removes or muddies attribution is socially corrosive.
You can now search software by features.
Up to 30 features at a time, with sharable links.

awesome! but how do we update the features? looks like it cannot be done in wiki

Hey let's go with this for a second.
JKR has two houses, one in Perthshire and one in Edinburgh, from what I can find (2020): https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-8073535/JK-Rowling-renovating-2-million-Edinburgh-home-putting-4ft-gates-Perthshire-estate.html
Let's assume she's not living alone. Cost of living, monthly, for a family of 4, in Edinburgh: $4,163.90 USD (£3,124.20) https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Edinburgh so yearly £37,490.40 ($49,966.8 USD)
"Pottermore Limited," her company, made a pre-tax profit of £17.2M per this article from Dec 2025: https://deadline.com/2025/12/harry-potter-audiobook-sales-cursed-child-revenue-slumps-1236653700/ (also confirmed by financial filings here: https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/06979090/filing-history )
After tax, that was £12,872,000 ($17,147,854.00 USD) per the same filing. Total revenue (this is where her money gets taken out of, not out of the profit) £54.3M ($72.3M USD)
On page 24 of the filing, where it says "the company is controlled by J.K. Rowling," the "amount due to individuals with control of the company" was listed as £22,196,000 ($29.5M USD)
And let's assume, even though this isn't true, that this is her only income. (She supposedly receives anywhere from 50-100M GBP each year from diverse streams https://www.newsweek.com/jk-rowling-making-money-hogwarts-legacy-what-we-know-1777087 )
If she quit working right now and lived only on 2025's income from one of these payouts from one company, making no other investments or changes, she would live at cost-of-living for 592 years.
When we talk about boycotting JKR, when we talk about removing her cultural relevance, no one is talking about removing her source of subsistence. That ship has sailed. She has enough for her, her children, her children's children, and probably her children's children's children to live comfortably for decades. But she isn't using that money to support herself or anyone else, and acting like she is using it for that purpose is playing into her public wing-dragging about how she wrote HP as a poor single mother trying to make ends meet.
When we make fanworks, when we promote fanworks, when we buy used, when we perpetuate her work in the common parlance, we are solidifying her cultural relevance, such that other people - not you, who already knows the series and carries that with you, but those who have not yet read it - will go out and read it, because they have to, to partake in that common culture.*
Whatever her reality used to be, it isn't that anymore, she's literally fine, but she does have a lot of money to throw around to harm people in massive ways using the UK's legal system as a cudgel.
This is not a woman who is worried about her livelihood: https://www.lbc.co.uk/article/jk-rowling-celebrates-supreme-court-ruling-5Hjd5Ww_2/
*I also want to take a moment to highlight that JKR's transphobia is not the first sign that she was a bad person, or that her books were rotten. They are riddled with racism and acting like they aren't does a great disservice to our siblings of color, be they trans- or cisgender. From "the house elves like being enslaved" to the ambiguously East Asian character "Cho Chang" to a number of other instances, including antisemitism, all of these things have ruined the books and movies for people of color and other marginalized people long before JKR started tweeting. For that reason alone we ought to discard her work from the foundation of cultural relevance, in the interest of a more equitable and kind society. https://www.themarysue.com/is-jk-rowling-racist-jk-rowling-naming-characters-explained/
